I built a trailer a few years back and thought it was a good idea to saturate the indespension units with Waxoil inside and out to stop the corrosion.
All it did though was lubricate (and possibly deteriorate) the internal rubbers to the point that they nearly rotated fully in the housing!
Over a period of weeks the mudguards got closer to the tyres....
Had to scrap them and fit new ones.

The independent suspension as such is/was very commonly used by a few local trailer manufacturers in California, and Mastercraft boats thought they would be great to use. Their reputation of failures dropping $50+K boats on the ground, left them with a very bad name.
