trailer recovery

Hi

I hope it never happens but

My tow vehicle is covered by the RAC under the Nissan warranty and they will recover the trailer if the Nissan breaks down but not if the trailer is at fault

I've contacted the RAC and they say it’s not possible to upgrade the cover.

So what’s the best cover to buy to get recovery cover to include the trailer if its at fault, trailer is 7.5 m long and 2.55 m wide

James

hopefully a little bit relevant and not too much of a diversion on the thread....

In March every year i replace the hub assemblies on the trailers we have, all roller coasters.. 1 thro super 9 both braked and unbraked...

I dont know about anyone else but i have never had a problem with a trailer other than wheels/bearings...

The cost of bearings are about £15/20 each plus the nause of rust/corrosion - so i dont bother just doing the bearings as for £40+ i replace the whole hub assembly in one and have utter peace of mind for the whole season...

I do trailer servicing for £100 + parts if in your in dorset

In summary if you allow a £200 a season for servicing you should on just about all accounts have a hassle free trailer..

I took advantage of research and info on previous posts on this minefield topic >>> and went for Britannia Recovery. Full cover for trailer breakdown and acr, irresepctive of which breaks down. Cover is extendable for European travel and is for trailers up to 8.0m
Britannia are now part of Liverpool and Victoria but strangely enough ?? the breakdown cover package via L&V is not as clear or comprehensive.

Seconded I'm with Britannia after a similar thread on here pointed me in their direction not that I've had call for it yet

RAC "Arrivals"

Join the Camping & Caravanning club (dont tell Jeremy Clarkson) then you'll qualify for their reduced rate increased spec policy which I think has buried in the small print it'll recover trailers longer than 5.5 metres and limited off road recovery.

If I can I'll try and scan the relevant part of the policy.

The attached photo is of a two year old Aluminum Trailer. The water is VERY saline here and I religiously wash the trailer/boat/truck down every time I haul out. I've even blasted entire super size cans of WD40 all over the trailer and its fasteners. Coming up my hill just the other day, the cheezy connectors that hold the spring leaves together failed (due to corrosion and the entire axle assy. rotated to the rear on the starbord side.

In terms of trailer builders, one pays the extra money for an aluminum frame, all the main componenets are galvanized and yet, on the carbon steel springs (probably the only way to go as stainless would be very expensive) they use light gauge carbon steel keepers that go quickly, no matter the maintenance.

In my humble opinion a trailer is more likely to leave one beside the road than any other device known to mankind!

I have just been through this loop too before I took the boat to France for 2 weeks ! Strange how when I called the AA to cancel my cover so I could get car and trailer cover elsewhere they swore blind they would come out to a broken down trailer - I am still waiting for them to highlight the wording that confirms that and post it to me though ;-)

Anyway - I joined the Caravan Club and then took out their Mayday Cover with Green Flag (more cover than going direct to Green Flag). It explicitly covers the tow car and the caravan or trailer behind it. If is a caravan then they seem to cover some repairs and incidents involving the caravan itself but if a trailer then they only cover the trailer and not what is on it - eg a sterndrive with a jammed tilt etc. However bearings wheels axles brakes hitches etc are all covered.

The best bit is that their cover will also cover onward journeys and allow for fixes with garages etc at your destination so you can carry on to your holiday and still use the boat while your car is being repaired or while the boat trailer is being fixed etc.

The AA cover I had was full Joint Personal Comprehensive and any car and cost £119 I think but the Caravan Club only £6 more (including the cost of being a CC member of £35 !!)

I also then took out the Caravan Club Red Pennant European Travel and Motoring Insurance for the 2 week trip to France to extend that breakdown cover and also add the usual travel insurance cover etc and that was £154 for complete peace of mind. If you trawl the Caravanning forums for comments on the Mayday and Red Pennant service you cannot find a bad word so for me it was worth it.

Also check some of the small print on some of the other operators who seemingly offer trailer breakdown cover as part of the motoring cover - some wording offers to come out and have a look to see if it can be fixed roadside within half an hour but if it can't then charges are on top for recovery etc.

The Red Pennant cover certificate came thorugh explicity stating I was towing a BOAT and not a caravan.

I also had both hubs / bearings and brakes all changed before I went as well but the SBS trailer on the ALKO axle has Sealed for Life bearings and the cost of hub and bearing and dustcap together is over a £100 per side PLUS fitting....I think you can buy a whole axle for not much more !

Hope this helps

Dave

(but not what is on the trailer
