No it’s not retrospective Ken, I got pulled because of a dodgy old skool lighting board that wasn’t working properly. Although it was working better than many you see on the roads.

Yes. And I thought sidelight exemption for boat trailers was still there - but I can’t actually find the rules about sidelights in a definitive form to see. That rule does only apply to trailers >6m in length which is measured excluding the A frame so won’t affect most of us.

To add to the fun it seems to suggest that the pointy bit *might* be deemed part of the trailer depending on construction. Meaning anyone with a boat 6m or greater might be in the frame.

Oh, I see what you mean, well that’s nice and clear. Why would they not just use an unambiguous measurement like the total trailer length, or the total train length...

The regs doc you linked to appeared to suggest number plate on the centre or to the left - no mention of the right, seemed a bit odd.

I noticed that, but it’s a Dutch built Trailer so assume it’s fully compliant. I have the certificate of conformity. I wonder if the rules are different for us due to driving on the correct side of the road[emoji848]

From memory and hav,nt checked for a year or more ,but i dont think there is any iva criteria for the mounting of the number plate , i have mine mounted similar to PD however one thing it says somewhere is the plate should be the same shape as that on the rear of the car hence disco hence square ,hence even nearer to the ground ,hence regularly reshaped , ,as i travel the a14 from felixstowe container port every day i often sit behind lorry trailers which tend to have plates hanging on bungeee bands or string ,sometimes on the trailer sometimes on the load ,often a light not in sight and their professionals ' on my previous trailer i had leds on the trailer and then a two pin plug to plug in a light and number plate which i hung on the a frame ,legal i dont know ,perfect for me ,but can you mount the illuminated number plate on the load ???

I had a quick look but no dice, I'm 99.99% sure I read the plate shape has to match the tow vehicle.

sorry ,i have had a look and i cant find the words either at the moment , i know i read it prior to getting all sorted for iva ,
Dont forget when you take a trailer for iva test there is not a boat in sight ,you can mount a rubbolite style trailer plate holder with wired light anywhere on the rear of the trailer even if its in the way to load your boat ,because when you load your boat you can move it somewhere else , just like you can put a new axle on a year down the road ,i have said it before its Triggers Broom
Travel safe make sure your trailer is amongst the safest out there ,its not really about lights and number plates ,it should be about a knackered bearing and a loose wheel potentially causing a deadly accident ,
