Trailer Lighting Boards.

Most trailer boards seem to be crap, I'm forever wiggling the bulbs to get them to work, hit a bump and its out with the screwdriver and it's wiggle wiggle again, the fittings for the bulbs are crap and not fit for purpose.

Are there any decent ones out there ?????

I've searched and searched and think the answer is no

Bought a new one, took it apart, changed all the self tapper fixings for nut and bolt stainless, took the lamps apart and tweaked all the bulb contacts and glued anything and everything in place that looked like it might want to move. No trouble since ... What sort of half-wit manufacturer uses self tappers to hold light units into Pound Shop reject thin wall plastic extrusions

I've looked at led's, but the tinterweb is laced with horror stories of high cost and unreliability. There must be some reliable one's out there though as the back end of artics seem to be littered with them these days.

I looked at waterproof led's too as matt h suggests but they're even more expensive and, in any case, I can't get the boat off the trailer with the lighting board on. Even had a brief look at wireless lighting boards but the price ... yours for just £474 RIBnet bulk buy anyone?

Here in the USA it is very rare to see the lights not mounted to the trailer permanently. It is something like one light bar to every hundred trailers.

I agree on the LED submersible, and of course would say permanently mount them Okay so you guys over there like more work and want to remove and install a light bar every time you use your boats.

Do you guys run side marker lights on the trailer? Most every trailer has them here in the USA.

ABout £25-55 each for a guide. Give towing and trailers ltd a call for the right submersible units

Hi Peter, with my trailer set up I have to remove the light board to launch the rib. As for side lights you can add them but it's not a legal requirment for your average rib, although on high sided trailers e.g. caravans then you do. I'm sure someone on here will correct me if I'm wrong

In my meanderings around various trailers - my own included - it is physically impossible to remove the boat from trailer without first removing the lighting board.

As it happens I am building a lighting board at the moment.

As other posters have said the ones generally available are, a) crap, and b) too short. I need a 2m one with a 8m cable.

I have sourced the lights from a lorry breakers. The ones on lorries are of much superior quality. I got a secondhand set for £15. Bought triangles, cable and plug from EBay for £12.

The big problem is the plastic board, I have had considerable trouble finding a suitable board. I have just found one from Greenhams, it goes under the name "Big Brother" barrier. Waiting for it to arrive.

I intend to make a custom mount so I can attach it to the A frame on the RIB. Probably a couple of bungees.

I have also sourced a number plate holder from a agricultural trailer supplier. This allows the number plate to be changed easily.

I haven't saved any money, but I will have a trailer board to my exact requirements.

Can you not lift the rollers up so the boat sits higher and clears the board?

If you immerse electrics in water, especially salt water, they will eventually fail. Far better to rig the board so it is easily removed.

After all, if you don't, someone else will while the trailer is parked.

Er, no. Taking the lighting board off takes, oooh, must be 20 seconds. To save 20 secs I want to raise the C of G of the trailer rig and immerse a load of expensive electrical stuff in salt water?

I don't think so

My belief is that number plate & lights must be attached to the trailer not the load and the height of the lights must be between 35 and 150 cms from the ground.
