Trailer Breakdown Cover

What is currently the best breakdown cover for a 4x4 and a 6m rib?

We have RAC cover inc in the car insurance so I will give them a call tomorrow to see if we are covered.

Green flag do car and trailer cover for not much. Don't think the others - AA, RAC, etc, - cover breakdown of the trailer itself (like bearing failure)

Your covered if the car fails, provided its not over 21ft they will bring trailer home too. If the trailer fails, your own your own. Add caravanning & camping club membership (around £30) and your covered on both. Trailer fails and you will be fine. Only downside is you get a camping mag every month!

I've heard a lot about Britannia breakdown too but I've never looked into that one.

Just read this, which I think it means it is covered by the RAC?

What types of vehicles are not covered?

Just read it again and it's only covered if the car breaks down

RIBase
Get RAC cover via the Caravan Club-you're covered for a trailer breakdown then.

I have Britannia Rescue Cover...
applies to my 4 x 4 and my trailer

this is the quote from their policy document
Caravans and trailers – your cover includes any caravan or trailer that is attached to your vehicle (this does not include help at the address that we have on our records or within a quarter of a mile of that address or the location at which your caravan is normally stored). Caravans and trailers should not be more than 8 metres in length (including A-frame) and fitted with a standard 50 millimetre ball coupling. All caravans and trailers must meet the requirements of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986. We will only cover vehicles over these limits if we have specifically agreed this with you, before your cover began. If appropriate you must always carry a legal and serviceable spare wheel or a manufacturer supplied or approved emergency tyre inflation kit or equipment and keys for any tyre security devices.

Try ADAC, second largest recovery company in the world next to AAA in the US. You will be covered all round Europe and it is YOU who is covered not the vehicle, so if you are with someone else with no cover you will be rescued, we have 7 cars so very useful as which ever one I am in I am covered . It includes free rental car, hotel and best of all a private aircraft medical emergency recovery scheme where you will be flown home from anywhere in the world on one of their own hospital aircraft or helicopters. If you get joint membership it covers your kids as well, you need the PLUS membership being a non German citizen. They do not take non German payment over the internet but you call a number in Germany and a German woman who speaks fluent English will sort you out, very handy card to keep in your pocket, plus you get discounts as well like 10% off purchases at Bicester Village e.t.c.

Costs £78 (98 Euros) a year for joint including kids.

COVER IN THE UK IS COVERED BY THE AA

The membership in ADAC

Here is what is covered, may be in German, if so hit translate button on your browser ADAC-Mitgliedschaften: Die wichtigsten Leistungen im Überblick

Contact is Ms Moser-Wickles who is Head of the Office in Regensburg.
Telephone No from the UK: 00 49 941 52344. She will answer all questions and sign you up.

I use Green Flag. Their policy wording is:-

Vehicle – means any vehicle which is owned by the Account holder and normally kept at Home provided it:
is either: a car, light van, motorised caravan, estate car, motorcycle or 4x4 off -road vehicle, which is privately registered in the United Kingdom.

carries no more than the number of persons recommended by the manufacturer (and for whom seats are provided) up to a maximum of 9 persons including the driver.

does not exceed (including any load carried) the following limits:

– gross vehicle weight: 3.5 tonnes

– external dimensions: 7 metres in length (excluding coupling device and tow bar), 3 metres in height and 2.3 metres in width.

is serviced, maintained and operated as recommended by the manufacturer and holds a current valid MOT certifi cate if applicable.

is a caravan or trailer of standard make that is fi tted with a standard 50mm tow ball, falls within the size and weight restrictions above and is being towed by another Vehicle that is owned by you and normally kept at Home at the time of the Incident. The weight of the caravan or trailer when loaded must not be more than the kerb weight of the vehicle towing it.

Seems to cover it.

(Never thought to check though until now - (thanks))

Make sure that your vehicle (as stated) is fully serviced at all times according to the manufacturers specification or you could end up paying the bill

I know of someone caught out by that when abroad, was VERY expensive not me though

Spoke to Caravan Club who wanted £46 membership and then recommended Mayday for the breakdown cover costing £62 to be towed anywhere in the UK = £108

Spoke to the RAC who said that our M&S car insurance which includes the RAC membership is not upgradable so I would need to take out new cover which will include RAC and Caravan Club membership to be towed anywhere in the UK for £106

Britannia will do it for £85 and still tow you anywhere in the UK but no Caravan club membership which I don't need anyway.

touch wood..not yet Peter.
My Landrover is out of warranty, so having the service gives me some peace of mind on both counts, 4 x 4 and trailer.

I also added 'comp' cover for my trailer to the car insurance, as its not usually covered- think it was £20, which based on how much we pay for trailers I thought was ok.
