I really didn't want this to decend into a my car is more rugged/better than your car, and have held off posting for just that reason as I knew from other threads in this forum that it was likely to happen. They are just different built and sold for different tasks. Mine works for me.

Thanks for all the very helpful input, it looks like I'm OK with my set up provided the trailer capacity is inline with the advice from ROG which I will check.

One question why 2 Land Rovers? Need to have a spare?

Its not an anti LR thing, its just like people who buy JCB's all the time and never anything else ?, they never seem to realise how much money they piss up against the wall ....some of these 'great British brands' just dont stack up on spec and reliability compared to the opposition

Couldn't agree more.... Now on my third Kubota, one kx36-2, a kx41-2 and now a 2009 kx36-3....(after originally owning a jcb 801.4) played with a friends Tacheuchi for a bit also, not a bad little machine. ( wow, what a great thread hijack ;-) )
Don't get me wrong, i will defend anything British when it deserves defending as we still have a lot to be proud of but i wont defend something just because its popular to do so and certainly not if i haven't weighed up the alternatives.

JCB minis are pretty poor when compared to the Jap gear. Wheel diggers are a different story.
The 'others' are not better enough. Other brands of wheel digger may be better in certain areas than a JCB, more powerful backhoe, better on the front bucket etc, etc, but when you factor in JCB service, finance, residuals etc, most compainies running multiple wheel diggers stick with Benford products.
Owner operators might go for the odd Cat of MF.

If we could somehow get this thread onto classic tractors, it would be my ultimate fantasy thread drift! :-)

I have an 8.6m RIB with a (calculated) weight of boat and engine of 1140 kgs. My trailer weighs 950 kgs so total weight excluding fuel and gear is say 2100 kgs.
My vehicle is an X5 3.0D auto with a gross weight of 2695 kgs and towing capacity of 2700 kgs.


Hang on a minute guys, I was under the impression that towing with a vehicle under 3500kg the maximum length of trailer was 7m excluding drawbar ? am I wrong ? Also I would be interested to find out what sort of 8.6 m Rib and engine comes in at that weight ?

I thought it was a bit on the light side my 6.5 m Redbay comes in about 2 ton

The trailer does have a maximum length from the end of the chassis to the samson/winch post. My 8.5 hung over the winch post by about 800mm, an then the back dolley went beyond the end of the chassis by about the same , and then the stern overhung that by a meter, so the trailer isnt the issue for that size of hull, but I agree the weight seems light

You ate right about the weight. I checked with Cobra today and they say 1.7 - 1.8 but trailer is only 600kg so total is 2.3 so still below max but getting a bit porky.

that rule doesn't apply for an "indivisible" load, which clearly a boat is.

Over 2.9m is an abnormal (which also means it's indivisible as well) load.

A slight difference to what you said, but it makes a difference.
