Towing for over 70s

My father has just turned 70 and has had to renew his driving license. He was told by someone the other day that if he wants to drive anything over 3500kg now he needs to have a medical as well?? Is this true? If it is, what does it apply to? Specially he wants to know of he can still tow a trailer up to 3500kg without any extra paperwork.

As far as I can gather it only applies to C1 and D1 categories. Not B + E....

Correct, if you wish to drive over 3500 then you need the higher catagory C1 and you will lose these at 70 unless you take medical and re-apply.

I'm sure it's all there but you're being very kind (or tongue in cheek?) on the "plain English"! What an impossibly complicated framework that looks designed to ensure no-one can follow it. Not your fault of course, what you get when the bureaucrats are given free reign to monkey about with things for years and no-one's thinking of the poor saps who have to try to comply with the result....

If you held B + E before the age of 70, that entitlement carries on after as well.
