I had a 2009 Shogun, it certainly towed well however it drank fuel (19 mpg average). It had loads of kit on it, sat nav, bluetooth phone etc, it was however a big noisy brute as a day to day car.

Got rid of it recently, it had only done 70,000 miles but the doors were rusting and the gearbox was getting decidedly iffy.

I wouldn't get another, particularly after the fiasco of trying to get Mitsubishi to sort out the rusting doors.

Would get another Landcruiser anytime.

Land Tanks are old straightforward technology that is easy to maintain, seldom need repairing. They are expensive secondhand, because people hang on to them , because they are so good, meaning difficult to find secondhand.
As for Disco 4s, I don't see how it is a step forward to design a vehicle that needs its body taken off to gain access for basic maintenance items such as diesel injectors or suspension bushes. It is great until it goes wrong then hits the wallet big time. As I said before a liability once out of warranty.

You are soooo right, why anyone would want improved technology, more comfort and better performance is beyond me

But taking your theory into account, surley the OP actually needs a Series 1 Landy, now that is simple, doesnt even have windows to go wrong

Luckily it's not my everyday car, but it's mega for chucking all the dive/boat/camping kit in the back and arriving were ever you are going relaxed but a little poorer cause of the 18mpg😧
