Too rusty?
Hey folks,
away offshore tomoro so thought i'd get the hubs stripped off my trailer, and bearings out so that I can get new ones ordered if necessary in time for me coming home! What do you think?
A) Is my suspension f*cked - or should the rubber be poking out like that? Also the arm is mega rusted!
B) Are my brake shoes ok, or should i replace them for the springs etc
C) Do i need new drums? If i measure the i/d of the drum where do you recommend i order from, if new ones are necessary? I notice the studs have fallen out, and it looks as though they should be tack-welded, so may have to replace anyway!!
Parts are currently in the dishwasher, hope the mrs doesnt leave work early.

I have had worse in the past I would strip down & grease all the moving parts (not the break shoes!)
Check bearing the bolts in the hubs are not bolted in from my experience just push back in, you could knock off the rust & coat in Hammerite paint & looking ay this your brake cables may have sized up too!

that rubber should not be like that.
But hubs and breaks need a god old clean etc.

Oh dear... the rubber is the same at both sides unfortunately! is it 'not safe' should not be like that?
Yeah i thought the hubs looked ok, will get the wire brush out once the dishwasher finishes!

was worried that was going to be the case!! Having a look on the indespension website, all their suspension Kits seem to be one unit for either side. However, my trailer has one solid axle, with the swing arms on both ends. So its the single complete unit i would require! Any idea where i get these? I have emailed indespension, so should hopefully hear back from them before the weekend.

came with breaks & hubs just needed the cables.
worked out cheaper than getting all the bits speratly as my axel was about 20 years old.
getting all new breaks was arround £100 for the shoes then about 30 for extra bits
Hubs cant remember how much they were. and bearings.
so it worked out better for me to get a new axel with all the bit already on it :-)

lucky you Jezza! i wouldn't grudge paying that sort of money! but i think over £500 including VAT seems a tad excessive! Would appreciate advice on aftermarket axles if anyone knows of any

Found this.... but the part number i need is apparently 51309 rather than the 51310 shown...

I would get Trailer Guy to have a look at the photos first to get his opinion first, unless you are towing long distance I recon it will be ok!
I have just replaced my axel on my trailer as I wanted to change to tapered roller bearings & the old one had the brakes stripped out, I also paid much less just over £300 with vat!

+1 on letting Trailer Guy give you some advice. I understood that the rubber suspension bits run a fair way into the axle frame and that having an inch or so sticking out would be nothing to worry about. My trailer certainly has a bit protruding. So long as the suspension arm isn't coming loose or rusted to the point of losing strength I would have thought all it needed was a good service and a coat of paint. And your shoes look like they have loads of thickness left.

i may be being a rough arse but my understanding is that the rubber and axle are pushed in, try wrapping a ratchet strap around both arms to squeeze them both into the axle itself
