The best big trailer maker...

I am after a fairly hefty, possibly four axle, trailer for a 5 ton 1m cabin RIB.

My first thought was RM or possibly Hayling, but I am open to recomendations if you have any.

I have say, I have not seen one that big before. 4 axles will scrub like a b*tch and eat tyres for breakfast. What will you tow it with?

All true

The trailer will be towed by a tractor and only between crane and shed, so it does not need to be very dainty.

How about three with the front one steering if it's not for road use

Send me a fag packet drawing of what size you need

Jim

RIBase
Why not stick a set of bunks on an old wagon and drag drawbar trailer? It'd probably be cheaper.

CLH trailers make some very good ones at very reasonable prices - triple axle for what most people charge for a twin.

The trailers are very heavy duty - easily carry a 12m Quinquari Humber with 2x inboard diesels and a massive trawler style cabin.

http://www.clh-trailers.co.uk/sm/index.php?link=6

I think the triple axle will carry 5 tons ok.

Guess what I am about to order................

They look industrial 'cos they're made of heavy duty materials, unlike some budget brands. They're keenly priced 'cos the company owner is a decent guy who wants to retain customers.

Oh, they also use taper roller bearings, which are easily maintained and can be changed at the roadside.

It will be a long time before it's ready for the scrapyard.

Quite right - it's mainly the brakes that cause trouble now - apparently all the brake shoes you buy these days are bonded instead of rivetted so water causes them to swell.

Malthouse, there is something similar to what you want near the Folly in Cowes. It's used on a slipway to drag boats out for maintenance - pulled up the slip by a winch. It's made by RM, has three axles (I think) which are spread along the length of it.

Hayling trailers will build anything you want. They did a double stacking dinghy trailer for the university sailing club last year that had to fit out existing trolleys. Was so problem at all.

How's that then?
Surely, if the lining material were likely to swell, this would happen irrespective of the fixing method to the metal shoe?

I would have thought so but that's what the trailer people told me - apparently it didn't happen with the old ones.

Hi Tim,

We have called Hayling, as like you I thought they would tackle anything but they said no to the weight specs.
