I really like the recycled plastic, it seems tough and it's a doddle to work with.

I made a cock up when I countersunk the holes. This is why I don't do woodwork

However!

I was able to fill the hole up with molten plastic and have another go

I stuck all the bits on for the final weigh in before Vosa and the galvanisers

And that's it.

I'll put a file together and book it in for a test.

Lightening Holes

Crikey it's been a while.

The trailer had an appointment this morning.....

I've been busy with other stuff but eventually got round to booking it in for a test, there was a month to wait for the first available appointment.

The test was painless enough, a lot of measuring and looking for the all important "E" markings on the lights and reflectors. The bloke who tested it was spot on, I think he could've chosen to be an arse but he was really helpful

I hadn't put enough orange side reflectors on to meet the regs, what I had done though was take a box of bits with me so two minutes and a couple of tek screws sorted that.

He picked up four bolts weren't quite long enough to fully protrude through their nylock nuts and allowed me to change them for longer ones

What did concern me was some deliberation about the trailer board brackets.

I did a traditional arrangement with a piece of 25x25 box sliding inside the chassis rails secured with an M10 hand wheel. This allows me to adjust the position of the trailer board and remove or shorten the arms when launching.

It's the same setup as my Indespension Roller Coaster trailer and many (almost all?) other boat trailers.

His concern was that the brackets were just clamped rather than a bolt going through a hole in the arm and in theory the arm could move or even be removed...

I said that's the point.

He phoned head office and they wanted a photo of the setup.

I'd put an additional weld nut on the chassis rail and offered to bolt a proper bolt through it to be tightened with a spanner.


They were happy with that (I was bloody delighted!).

Another issue was the dimensions.

The application form isn't too helpful when you're booking in a little boat trailer.

Mine is a drawbar trailer and I should've referred to the picture of the HGV dray trailer with an articulated draw bar on the application form.

I'd just measured the whole trailer but what I should have done was measured from the back up to the "Neptune's trident" thing. Everything forward of that is classed as the drawbar and isn't included in the length of the trailer.

The measurements need to be within 10% of those stated on the application form.



Bless him though, he let me "re-declare" the dimension and all was good.

Anyway, it passed!

I pulled it apart and dropped off for galvanising, should get it back in a couple of days.

Nice one Jim , just in time for the sibing season !.

Your old trailer got broken down for bits and rebuilt the club safety boat trailer,
a massive improvement for us on using this heavy old GRP boat, it now gets used every saturday for the junior coaching.
