Show us your Shogun Rig (nearly)...

Should I get one of these for rib launching, and general beach going or not?

Anybody got any tales of woe regarding them, that might help me make up my mind?

Moved to this from a Discovery :o)

Hi

Just got this last May to replace a Series 2 Discovery, so similar to your model.

Very pleased with it - fine for the towing/launching the boat (even on slimy slips) and pulling much heaver loads like the two horses I trailer about from it.

I also use it to pull a set of rollers and a chain harrow for managing our horse paddocks, and it does all that on sloping grass fine too. Good wide tyres for beaches also.

I checked out the reviews and thought they were a good buy.

Only down side is I find the visibility for reversing isn't as good as the Disco, but you get used to that.

Best towing vehicle i have ever owned...
We've owned this one for around 10 years now and its never let us down (and we work it bloody hard too) Mind you it gets serviced to an extreemly high standard. Still going very strong today even though it is approaching its 19th birthday.

Go for a 2.8 one though as, apart from being more powerful, it used a timing chain and not a belt.

You will be on first name basis with your local forecourt petrol station owner though .

Seen a 2.5 diesel at a very good price. Clean tidy vehicle, 100K on the clock 1999 model, didn't think 7.5K miles pa average was that bad really.

And on the basis we have the same boat albeit I have 50hp less, I am already pretty friendly with my local filling station, as no doubt you are.

Great wheels by the way.

Had a couple of Shoguns in the past,with no real issues and when an 03. V6 Auto Petrol LWB come back in PX I pounced on it for a Tow vehicle..Excellent,with plenty of Toys, and not too juicey if you dont Cane it Plenty of the things in 'Breakers' nowadays too

Our previous ride was a LWB 3.2 DiD Elegance Auto. I've not been more disappointed with a car.

It sounded like a bangers in a bucket when cold and handling at speed was worrying. The cabin was tacky and dated and the Satnav was a complete joke.
A large main dealer service was £650 with no wash or courtesy car, compared to BMW X5-£450, Disco D3- £375.

Wouldn't touch another.

But, an older cheap SWB would make a decent tug. I use an L200.

The 2.5 engine is still very capable and is shared with the L200 so parts are widely available. Its also slightly better on fuel too.

Mechanical injection does'nt help the fuel efficiency but does make it reliable. Loads of electronics inside but thankfully they don't cause too much bother.

We have never had any major issues with ours even though we treat it very much like a tractor.

It had far more grunt than our landmark TD5 Disco (which we sold a few years back) and is almost on par with the 3.0 Hilux Surf we owned for a while too.

Had this weapon many years ago and treated it for what it was designed for, being in the industry and all ... 3.5V6 24 valve

Had a 110 previous to that and I have to admit it was different kettle of fish altogether. But then, it's horses for courses. Lockable centre and rear diffs at the push of a button, hi/low 2WD/4WD, built for towing tbh. Powerful engine - pass everything on the road except a gas station. Towed 5.5 tonnes with her once too - didn't even have to put it in to 4WD. Regretted selling her tbh.

However, will be going to be buying a 110 next, but only cos I can't get a hard top Shogun lol

Ive had
2 x 2.5 lwb
1 x 2.8 lwb
and currently drive a 3.2 did.
All have been autos and all have been amazing with only general maintainance costs tyres ,brakes,exhausts
The 3.2 did is just touching 156,000 miles flew through its Mot and i would still feel confident in driving anywere,
Fuel consumption on the 3.2 is around 28 mpg.
As mentioned the 2.5 is a little guttless but can be improved with a few simple mods.

After previously owning A swb 1959 SII 2.1/4 petrol and then a 1988 LR90 2.5TD, which where great offroading, the SII was very attention seeking.
I then got a Pajero/Shogun import 2.5tdi lwb exceed, Which I don't think would handle serious off road, without mod's, mainly due to poor rear ramp angles and chassis articullation. because there chassis are solid, must be 3-4mm with hardly any flex. where as LR chasis are, or at least where 2mm giving exellent flexability for offroading, with the down side of quick to rot out if not properly protected,
I've had my pajy for 9 years and only had to replace a few heater pkugs and brakes and hasn't required much attention, passing every mot without fail. after replacing a few fog lamps. oh and a sticky back door lock.
something I'm amazed with are the BFG A/T tyres I had fitted eight years ago, they've still got loads of wear in them with no perishing. easy 3/4" depth left.
I've also had a 2005 L200 Warrior with the same tyres which I wrote off in black ice earlier this year, so replaced with an 07 Shogun elegance which Is in the missiz name and I'm almost band from using it, because I'll only break it she says. I'm still gonna get a tow bar for it though

I had a 2.8 LWB Shogun and a later 3.2 LWB which I kept for 6 years, and loved both of them.

The 3.2 was was a much more refined ride etc than the 2.8, but it always felt a little less rugged and more vunerable when using it hard.

The only reason I moved to a LR D3 was the avilability of parts for the 3.2 from non Mitsubishi sources was terrible, and the local dealers were really unhelpfull. I also fanciedb a change after 8 years of Shoguns.

I would seriously consider either as a tow car again, but the SWB ones I drove always felt a bit 'twitchy' compared to the LWB, and of course have far less carrying capacity.

However I've become LR'd now and will probably stay with them for a while.

Thanks for all the advice. I read it all, and to use as a vehicle to ferry the boat from park to slip, plus kids and dog onto the beach etc etc, rather than continuing to wreck my car, this is joining the Silverfox fleet tomorrow.

Hope it works, as if it doesn't check out the for sale section on Monday.

Very nice Will, what engine is she?.....Auto?

Im sure you will enjoy her, as already said, mine has done me proud, so much so that i cant see myself ever selling her....

Ahh, good choice on the manual box... I spent ages looking for a manual when we bought ours. Took me a long time but well worth it, much prefer the manual to the more complex auto.

You just know if an auto goes wrong, it will be many pounds sterling to resolve the issue.

That's a lively motor the 2.8 same as the one they use in the L200 imports, much better than the flat but very reliable 2.5 in my japero, she looks great condition btw nice find,
