Are taper roller bearings capable of carrying the same load as the originals though?

don't think it makes any difference, as long as the right size bearings are specified, but I'm sure someone far brighter than me will know, certainly no sign of any problems following good runs on the motorway so all good so far

I am in a similar situation and planning to tow to Spain in the summer. I have a Meredith and Eyre axle on a Rapide trailer. I don't believe the axle is original. The issue I have is that the backing plate on the brake drum is heavily corroded. A new hitch was fitted last year and I also bought new wheels from M&E.

Quote last year from M&E was 350 plus vat for a new axle. Quote the other day from Mersea who now supply Rapide 350 to 450 plus vat depending on parts.

Does anyone know who manufactures the axles for Mersea's Rapide trailers?

I was also tempted to buy a new 1500kg single axle trailer and looking for the best breaking system etc Quotes I have had in recent weeks is as follows:-

SBS 2250
Rapide 2434+vat
Gecko aluminium 2154+vat
Freewheel boat trailer Netherlands €2400+vat for aluminium 1600kg
Freewheel boat trailer Netherlands €2000+vat for galvanised 1600kg
Lider Sun-way (French) €3850 +vat with disc brakes and oil filled hub
Vanclaes stainless steel frame, galvansied axle with disc brakes and oil filled hubs 5565 including vat

The SBS and Rapide have swing beam. The continentals don't seam to go for that system but use a pair of wheels at the rear to line the rib to the trailer.

I have come full circle and tempted to go for a new axle. But which one?

I could also do with someone teaching me how to change brakes and bearings just in case! I once had a trailer wheel come off a De Graaf unbraked trailer that was less than 12 months old due to bearings corroding. Not funny when the wheel overtakes you!!!!!!!!!!

We've replaced several axles for customers (mainly because the stub axle has corroded and in some cases collapsed) and always bought them from the relevant trailer manufacturer, (paid the premium price!). But we came across TrailerTek - Trailer Parts and Spares a few years ago. Its a one stop shop for all things 'Trailer'. Amongst everything they sell they do a range of bespoke braked and unbraked axles, you just give them the spacing you require (explained on there site) and its made / galvanized / delivered within 4 weeks for approx. We paid approx 300 inc delivery for a 1500kg braked axle. Chris.
