SBS trailer bearing type

late in the day but just been told I'm collecting a boat tomorrow that has "noisy" bearings. Anybody know off hand what type of bearing is likely to be fitted (ie taper or the pressed type bearing that cannot be changed at the roadside as easy) ? It's only a local collection. They've quoted me £200 to change them for me. Reasonable if pressed type I guess

I'm guessing the model too at the moment but it's either the R2/1000EL OR R2/1300EL Braked version.

I'm guessing I'm paying through the nose for "emergency" replacements at no notice. I know the bearings themselves will only cost £30 maybe. The big problem is not having a press to hand capable of getting them out/in at the brokers if they would require it ?

i've changed them without a press before.

Big, ball pein hammer, 3/4" socket that's big enough to line up with the outer race / carrier of the bearings, a set of circlip pliers and a big set of forearms.

hey presto

can you pick it up on a car transporter (hire one from tim at tamar?), and then change the bearings when back at yours?

got to be cheaper than £200. but then maybe it's not worth the embuggerance!

Good advice. We will check them before towing and if need be we will get them changed. Not worth the risk, just makes it more expensive for my buyer They will be changed down here anyway but we will have the gear to do it then.

Cheers for the advice

I can not see this is possible with mine as the bearing are pressed in up to a lip which covers the outer casing of the bearing, so to drive it out you have no option but to drive them out with the inner part of the bearing you can not see the outer!

The last photo shows the inner race which I would have to use to drive out the bearing!

Thanks for your time Nick we ended up getting them changed at the brokers for £150 but t least it's done. The brakes were shot too so have been removed. We will be re-fitting them at our place over the next few days.

Thanks again

Hi Nick

I know what you're saying. With your type I just use a smaller socket and bear down on the seal over the bearing balls instead. As they're being replaced, you don't have to worry about damaging them. They transfer the energy to the lip / shelf, between the two sets of ball bearings, that's part of the bearing case. This should move it out.

I've done it quite a few times. It's not my prefered method, I can assure you, but it does work!

PS. Glad you got sorted B & O

Thanks. Got home safe so just the brakes pads to replace for it to be braked again. Thanks again for your advice.

Resuscitating the thread 'cos I was hoping someone with experience of the SBS R2/1000EL could tell me the bearing numbers it uses as a friend wants me along to collect a boat and as the trailer has had nothing done to it for a few years I want to at least have the comfort of a set of fresh bearings available if they look scary on arrival. I've learned you can never trust what people say about bearings they won't be towing! I won't be bringing a hydraulic press - there are limits. But a big hammer and a socket set might apparently get the job done if strictly necessary going byTrailerguys helpful suggestions above.

from experience, you will wait for ever for a return call or email, and I was buying a trailer not looking for details on bearings, they are good with advice etc but you will have to chase them!
