Repair or replace

Any trailer experts out there who can advise on this? Shoes are knackered, somehow I've towed with the handbrake on (and I've checked the CCTV and I definitely took it off before the journey!)

Anyhow it's about 40 quid for shoes, and probably about another 50 to replace the internals. Backplate replacement seems to be more of an issue as it needs welding.

£100quid for repairs or £410 for a replacement axle, but I'm skint.

Biggest question is, should the amount of corrosion on the swing arm and back plate be a concern?

Gut says replace, but an experienced opinion would be appreciated.

when i did mine it looked like that after 6 years i just stripped it down knocked all the rust off to inspect, mine was still meaty so i covered it in petrolartum paste fitted new shoes and kept an eye on it but my wheels were OK.
brake shoes de-laminate because thier stuck on now days not rivited and even with the hand brake off they can stick as i found out. i was told to change shoes every two years when i had it serviced.
and thats with a flushing kit on it and flushed every time

I have a habit of overdoing things, so I'm relieved to hear everyone's thoughts.

Clean up and preserve it is then.

I'll get the bits ordered tonight!

Cheers everyone

Don't forget to change the cables, they are what usually cause the brakes to stick !

You can buy direct from specialised aerosols. I think I paid around £20 for 5l. The aerosols are only about £3-4 each direct. They are only at the other side of town from me so I collect.

Give them a ring first to tell them what you want. It's a factory & office. They don't have a trade counter, they'll get it ready for you. They sell all sorts of stuff & are very friendly & will show you around.
