Need help trailer brakes
Hi
I have just completed a complete o/haul of my boat trailer set up. Adjusted and checked everything, fitted new safety chains, ratchet straps, balanced trailer the whole bit. However, I am not happy with the brakes. I have overrun cable brakes with over center handbrake. The drawbar/ coupling has a set of rubber bellows. Whendriving forward the bar extends about six inches out of the bellows and when I brake there is a loud clunk which I assume is the bar going in. Same clunk when I pull away. If I park the rig and the last direction was foward the bar is extended. When uncoupled I can push it back in by hand and hear a click every 1 inch or so. I cannot pull it back out by hand. I know the handbrake works as it is easy to test. Not sure if brakes are working when driving. How would you test this. I am used to hyd. brakes so this is new to me.
Does anyone have knowledge of this system. Is something broken? What should happen?
The trailer is made by Ellibe in Italy.

Sounds a bit like the damper in the head may have gone.
It is just like a car shock absorber or a tailgate lift arm.
In the UK these are just attached at both ends by a bolt.

Hi there,
which model and year is it?
I have the Ellebi LN 570, It has no damper inside.
In this case you have to adjust the brake pads and after that, the cables itself.

AhHa. Removed damper, actually it is an airspring, and nothing wrong with it.
However, when looking around noticed that there looked Like a pin or bolt missing in the linkage. The air spring does double duty as a handbrake spring and a tow tube return spring. The air spring is connected to the hand brake mechanism which is connected to the normal braking system with a clevis pin through the brake rod yoke. Went to store and got clevis pin and washers and split pin. Had to modify a bit. That is why the handbrake worked but the normal brakes did not. All fitted back up but now have to re-adjust brake cables/rod.

Well!!!!!!!!!!!!, brakes still did not work and still got a clunk  .
Found that the pivot bolt for the operating lever goes through the whole assembly and the lever was binding and therefore the mechanism was not returning to the "no load" position. Unfortunately you cannot see this as it is inside the drawbar. This caused me to incorrectly adjust the brake cables. I caused this myself by going round the trailer and check tightening all nuts and bolts. Seemed a good idea ! However, it is bad design to not use a shoulder bolt in such and application and use a loose nylock nut. 
PS: had to dispatch a 3 foot rattler today in the garage in the middle of this project. Many thanks to Jake the lab. for finding it and barking his head off.
