need a new trailer advice please

well after a cracking week away only spoilt by my trailer snapping behind the axle on one side. bow tie down came off and was bouncing up and down putting too much weight over the transom supports that bent them behind the axle snapping one side. . the guy in lochinver who repaired it for me said it was very thin and like trying to weld tissue did a very good job of bracing it and it got us home fine well done Gordon neam on a sunday afternoon too .so I have been checking out my options and am looking at the sbs r 2/750 b rated at 750kg with max payload of 600kg will this be sufficient for a avon sr4 with a mercury 40 2 stroke as I am not sure of the boats weight and engine weight .the boat would also be loaded with 50 ltrs of fuel and about 20 kgs of other camping type stuff once a year for our holidays. thanks for any thoughts

I think the boat without engine weighs about 160kg. So Plus Engine, Anchor, Fuel, Batteries, General Kit, then even with your camping kit you should be well under your total.

thanks don't think I will trust a secondhand trailer now mine looked fine.but don't want to buy a new unsuitable one

dont go nuts with the trailer weight rating as the new rules mean it could cause issues if you go overboard.... particularly if you change car. try and go for a sub 700kg total at least on the plate...

The new rules? Those the licence changes? Surely they only affect if you get your licence after a certain date?

But I thought the recent discussion on here had concluded that:

You can't tow a car + trailer plate which is more than your licence allows.

You can't tow a car + actual trailer weight which is more than your licence allows.

So provided you are staying unbraked even with the most recent licences you can tow car+trailer = 3.5T. Max unbraked is 750kg which means the car weight will be fine up to 2.75T which is pretty beefy...

You'll be fine. My SR 5.4m all up with engine, battery, fuel etc. was less than 750kg on its trailer. Only about 5kg less, but less!

Also look at the Indespension JS05 trailer - either bunked or with rollers.
I have my SR4m on the roller version of this and it is so easy to launch and recover.
It is marketed as a Jetski trailer primarily - hence the JS.

cheers ill look into that I was told a bunked trailer would spread the load over the whole length of the trailer so hadn't considered a roller type

I have a Nicholson trailer (by the people who do raider boats I think). It was very competitively priced and so far has been nothing but solid, reliable and trouble free. They are up north (j35ish off the M6), which swayed me as most of the others would involve excessive delivery or a long drive to collect.

thanks everyone after watching a guy launch a boat of a roller trailer single handed on a really shallow slip (the water wasn't taking the weight of the boat off the trailer as is helpful with bunks) he just pushed it off with one hand and it rolled off and sat in the water brilliant .I think im going rollers I had virtually settled on the jet ski indespension one searider mentioned then I saw this available with rollers at the same price it looks strong and im a bit paranoid after the snipe snapping any thoughts ebay no 171876389901

The SBS 750 is a superb trailer for a sr4.
Speak to Gliddons marine. Pm me for a price to ask for. It handles superbly on the road and is way superior than the snipe which i normally discard straight away.
Make sure you ask for the 500x10 wheels NOT the wideboy wheels.

Rollers are really easy to recover with even if you accidently forgot the tide was going out and the boat ended up on the sand 30' from the water.....

Another vote for Nicholson Trailers here. Just picked up a new 2600kg one for our Scorpion & they were the cheapest by far, they use Indespension Axles and hitches & it seems just as good or better than my old SBS. Really helpfull guys

Really? That's strange. In the 2600kg size they were nearly half the price of a Genuine Hallmark Indespension trailer and £1000 cheaper than sbs. Perhaps they arent so competitive in the smaller trailers. Sorry to have wasted your time.

+1 for the JS05 got one for my Sr4 and it works a treat, looks just the same as the SBS One

You haven't wasted my time at all I really apreciate everyone's input including yours I am a novice re matching a rib with a suitable trailer and need all the advice I can get .I did look at Nicholson and the sub 700kg one was over a thousand pounds putting it 3 hundred ish above the others
