How to change bearings

Now, its been sometime since I got my trailer and although i'm only a few hundread yards from the slip its time to think about changing the bearings.

Having never done this before and having no idea where to start, apart from by the wheel, could anyone point me in the right direction on how to do it.

Its a single axle unbreaked trailer.

Any comments or links to posts that i failed miserably to find would be very much appreciated.

Depending on the type of hus and bearings you have its easy
first do you really need to change them or clean them and re-grease / refit.

1. CHOCK the wheels and make sure its not going anywhere.
2. jack up and remove wheel
3. remove bearing cover.
4. remove split pin
5. remove crown nut.
6. PULL .. the hub should come off.
check berings and bearing shells ( shiny things bearings run against) some people think these are part of the hubs but they are not and do come out. with some brute strength and a big hammer ;-)
if they look ok all you need to do is re grease with good marine tailer grease and refit.

checking for play in the bearing when you re fit. you only want a small ammount of play once its all back together.
this can be adjusted by tightening or slackening the crown nut.
dont forget to make sure the split pin is back in.

I think I may have my indespension book that shows a exploede view of a hub/bearings

Thanks for the above, the bearing cover, is it just a case of hitting it and puling at it to get it off. I have metal ones that dont seem to want to shift?

As you say they may just need a re-grease and re-fit which would be ideal, but having never done it before you guide will be handy.

dont over tighten the castle nut when you put it all back together!

yep use a hammer and large flat blade screwdriver under the lip .
GENTLY hammer it off side to side.
And the beearings sould move freely but only have about 2 mm ish "wobble"
The wheels should spin freely but not too freely.

When refitting the bearing cover or end cap, use a rubber mallet. Draper is a good make. The number of folk that use a lump hammer drives me nuts!

Thanks for all your answers, i will attempt this later on during the week. I had planned to give it a go today, but the wind has dropped to nothing, the tide is in and the sun is out. So i'm being dragged shopping.... yea right, no chance, out on the boat.
