our spare was horizontal on the searider trailer and kept in contact with the drawbar by tyre pressure-ended up with a couple of nasty bulges in the tyre wall
any references to being mounted have been deliberately deleted in order to avoid a trip to the bilges

First of all I'm glad you got home eventually.

I've always kept mine in the back of the car even if the missus did moan about the lack of space (no problems with new car). I have a wheel mount on the trailer that stores the wheel vertically, but I was always worried about theft, even with a chain or bike lock. I'd probably lose the key or combination or when I needed to get it off the lock would be rusted solid. But that's my kind of luck
