I think the difference you're talking about is zinc coating (electroplating) vs hot dip galvanizing. Zinc plating puts a very thin, shiny layer of zinc over the steel. Hot dip galvanizing involves dipping the steel part in a molten zinc bath, which leaves a very thick, dull grey layer of zinc over the steel, which is much more corrosion resistant than plated. Downside to HDG is that the heating of the steel part during the bath means they are not strength graded (at least that's what I understand.)

Oh no

Well thanks for the replys

I am now wishing I had paid attention in Chemistry lessons as I ve already replaced all the standard bolts with stainless ones!

Might stick some nylon washers in to see if that slows down the dreaded corrosion process

Shouldn't get much galvanic action unless you routinely leave your trailer in seawater.

I have a fair amount of stainless hardware on my trailer (it would be all, but the stuff is pricey), and don't really worry about dissimilar metals causing a problem (and it hasn't yet.)

+1 Dave, knowing how well you look after your kit I don't think you'll have any problems, as long as you give it all a good wash down after it's been in the salty stuff it'll outlast the standard u bolts etc

One thing not mentioned is different properties of stainless vs mild(galvanized).

Look at a SQL of a SS shackle, and compare it to a galvanized one, the SS shackle will have a lot lower SWL compared to a similar sized galvanized one.

I believe it is due to the SS work hardening, and having very little shear strength, but I will leave that to others to explain! As always you get many different grades of SS as you do Mild, or High Tensile steels.

Just something to think about if you are thinking of putting SS u bolts on!

I have got a Roller Rapide trailer and i want to replace all the bolts and C bolts on it as they are all rusted to hell. Although the rest of the trailer is mint, just the seawater has eaten all the fastners!

Strangely I am finding it quite difficult to find the correct size bolts i need. I guess with the C bolt as long as its wide enough it doesnt really matter if its a few mm larger, but i need the following, anyone got any sites they have used before.

1 x 50mm x 170mm
6 x 50mm x 110mm
5 x 40mm x 170mm
4 x 40mm x 110mm

Preferably stainless steel, galv or zinc plated.

Wooshing them with some WD40 only takes 5 minutes every so often and seems to keep most of the rust at bay.
