Extending the drawbar...

Need to extend the drawbar on my trailer cause the boat sits too close to the car.

Has any one done this in the past?

Any good ideas? Click image for larger version

Isn't that the trailer you were going to shorten cos it was too long😎

Haha no, this is a different one I bought instead. Was close and cheaper.

Was going to just take the hitch off, weld a piece of box section on the end and put new holes in for the hitch to go back on.

But would love some other suggestions

Won't be legal if you chop it and weld best to ask the manufacturer for an extended draw bar

Can't you move the boat back on the trailer? By how much does it foul the car?

Needs to be 9" longer. It can tow just sharp turns are a no!

It's as back as it can be. Once I have the engine mounted the transom needs to be supported otherwise it will put stress on places around the transom.

Have given snipe an email. Click image for larger version

Also want somewhere to put a spare wheel. Also planning on attaching a small secure box and holder for light board, ratchet straps and tools etc.

Bunks. Boat fits perfect on the bunks apart from their height. Click image for larger version

Cant you replace the central draw bar with a longer box section and re bolt the fittings?

I have moved my boat back which ment it was a total re-think so I replaced the bunks and put a keel bunk in bit different I know. I used tanalsed timber 6 x 1 1/2 thick adding around 12 inches to the rear so the keel bunk holds the weight works well and cost around £40.

Height wise you can get longer uprights

What makes adding a piece of channel illegal if its done correctly and welded inside and out. Use an agricultural draw bar pin to secure the hitch portion to the rest of the trailer and it enables you to remove the whole tow hitch bit. Great for security..

Change of design & CE regulations same as you carnt make your own tow bars any more.be best to drop bunks back and if height an issue put new bunks on top of existing bunks simple to do cheep. Ok balance changes a bit but that can be compensated by putting the spare wheel at the back of the winch post and weight distribution in the boat.

What section can the boat take? I have a have a brand new extended drawbar in my toybox made for a 750 kg trailer. It's brand new Galvanised and already drilled for Hitch, Rollers, Jockey wheels etc and its 2.1 metres long and if memory serves its 70mm square section 3mm thick

It cost us 30 quid and you can have it for that. I don't do pm's so text me on 07859886431 if interested.

Thanks for the offer but I think it'll be too big.

The current draw bar is 2"x2". The chassis wouldn't accept anything bigger annoyingly

AIUI the requirement for a trailer to have type approval only applies to those manufactured after 28/10/2012. If yours was made prior to that then no reason why you can't extend the bar.
The Law for Trailers.
Be sure to do it properly, not just butt welding a new piece on.

Looking at your pic I would say that your draw bar is bolted at the tip of the A frame, Welded at point 'A' and bolted again at both point 'B's

I would look into shortening the bar at point 'B' and moving it forward and then adding another bar across where it was previously bolted?

You would have to have some welding done and some cold galve (I've never thought much of this product, prob better with hammerite?) to be able to bolt the "B's back to the A frame.

There are loads of other ways of doing it, like adding an inner box section inside your draw bar to act as an inner sleeve which will allow you to continue a drawbar the same size, joined by bolting and welding.

But at the end of the day and with any old trailer, if anything goes wrong, its down to you

Did you get it cheap Luke? Can you make a few bob profit on it & buy another that fits? Chopping & carving, will destroy any future value & make it worthless.

Just IMHO
