Engine Overhang ?

Curiosity question. I always tow with the arms supporting my trailer board so that the board sits right at the back but I believe some overhang of the outboard is allowed.
Personally I don't want some prat getting to close to my new 5 blade stainless prop but what's the legal stuff ?Click image for larger version

Paddlers
I've always towed same as you with no probs max overhang use to be 6 foot but I think you have to have a hi vis prop bag anyway.
Talking about being hit up the ar-e I lent my boat to a mate to take his family away an old girl hit the back of the Skeg with her bonnet no damage to the engine but opened the bonnet like a bean tin.
Put a strobe on the back you can see them for miles

Cheers Sonar. The old girl's 50 this year. Jeffstevens763@g, I have the led type trailer lights and they're bright little buggers plus the large prop bag with its reflective triangle has got to give me a bit of confidence that I'm visible.
The legal side was the bit I was curious about as you see lots of different set ups?

I am sure it's 6 foot paddlers quick look on the VOSA site should sort the legal side.but to be honest your set up with the LEDs on is about as good as it gets you'll never stop the ar-e hole that too close and Carnt stop.

Cheers

last week I had a load of timber from a job I was working on, It was on the roofrack of my van and Mr plod pulled me over on the way home, he told me the max overhang for a load was 1.8m (5ft 10"), he got a tape out and my load was 2.5m (8ft 2") he told me to take my time getting home and let me go, now I have about 150ft of siberian larch knocking about lol, as for nailing a high viz to the end he said it made no diffrence, I think that was my lucky day.

Upto 1m no specific rules, but anything that might be dangerous should be protected.

1m-2m must be clearly marked with visible material (e.g. Orange prop bag). 2-3.05m must have a special board (triangular design) and be lit at night. After that, you are into escorts and police notification territory.

Slate. Clearly Mr plod hasn't read: https://www.gov.uk/government/upload...ging_loads.pdf

But either way you were illegal. Or did you have it sticking out a window... That upsets them a lot..

How long are the boards... 2m front, 3m car 2m rear... Means you can move 7m on the roof legally...

Oh I was illegal, I had 7.2m lenths of timber with no overhang at the front of the roofrack because I was worried about the wind getting under it, all the above tied on with two £5.99 straps and four bungie's, the back of the van was so full I couldn't have fitted a piece of 2x1 in there +tools, he followed me for two miles and I was only doing 45mph and another mile from home, he did say someting about a weight limit on roofracks and I was most likely 3 times that limit, but like I say my lucky day.

Most car weight limits I've seen are 100kg.
