Electrics for Towbar in Mondeo 2005 Hatchback HELPPPPPP

Firstly Happy New Year to everyone. I hope you all are recovering from last nights adventures........

Now, I've recently bought a 2005 "55" Hatchback Mondeo TDCI. MK3

I'm going to be a getting a detachable witter towbar for it, but i'm struggling to work out if i need a dedicated wiriing kit for it or not. Some sites say i do and some say i dont.

I'm not overly keen on breaking into the wiring loom just in case it does mess up the electrical system but of course price difference for a basic electric kit to a dedicated kit is huge. I'm happy to spend the extra if its needed of course and am not simply looking for the cheap way out.

From what i can see there is no dedicated socket for trailer lights in the car, only a positive terminal. However there is a connector block in the rear light cluster. See Pic below. Now am i right in thinking i can just get this kit from PF JONES Towbar Electrics For Ford Mondeo Hatchback/Saloon 2000-2007 7 Pin Wiring Kit | eBay and simply piggy back with the connector from this?

Any one else done this in a 2005 Mondeo at all that could advise the best route to take. It doesnt have a bulb failure system, i know that much. PS, I only need a 7 pin for a trailer board.

you might want to check a few caravan forums before you tow with any bar as I didnt and it cost me over £850.00

Clydeoutboards, you've lost me, what do i need to check for???? I'm certianly checking for the best price, but still getting a decent make and ensuring that weight etc is ok. Anything i'm missing then???

actions-i don't know what he is referring to but i bought a westfalia detachable for mine and i'm about to put one on new car-works well for me and you can't see anything is there which i like.

Yep, i'm in the same boat as you. Want it for towing but at all other times its nice to get rid of it, especially as i have reversing sensors which will sound all the time for a fixed one. (i think).

the caravan forums have lots on this, or did a year ago. The flywheel is prone to breaking and mine did along with loosing oil from the clutch i.e. when you put your foot on the clutch is stays down and pisses oil like I have never seen before. oh and this was not even when I was towing. this happened about 2 weeks after towing a shetland blackhawk.

oh to replace the flywheel the clutch must come out so depending on your miles this might as well be done at the same time.

I then had to get the car towed to a local garage as the relay on the aa would have have taken 5 swop overs. lucky for me I was not far from a pals in England but it took 4 days for the car to be fixed and 850 cash!

Well i've ordered a westfaila detachable towbar from Pf Jones and the basic electrics having had some brillaint wiring advice from trailerguy, saving me buying the expensive electric pack for no reason.

Clydeoutboards - Thanks for the heads up. Ive done a load of searching and found some issues but also a lot of positives for the Mondeo. Luck of the draw i'm thinking. My old car had to have a new clutch due to towing, so i guess no car is perfect. Fingers crossed and if it happens i'll deal with it. its only got 50k on the clock so its not been used that much.
