Electric Trailer winch

Call me lazy,if you like but evan with only 4 metre rib 40 HP engine it is heavy going at times this recovering in bad conditions,
Would like to make a trailer winch was told you could use a window wiper motor ,any body done this any idears welcome

I have not made an electric which but I bought one off ebay. Used it once and found it to be too slow, sold it this afternoon.

You might be better of getting a high quality hand winch and an extra pair of hands would be a bonus.

I got an electric wench as well. NOt too slow and she is able to drive as well. Very expensive to maitain.

Hi

We use winches of all types for a wide variety of applications. If you have good facilities you should be able to get the gearing spot on and haul in cable with any size motor but in my experience it requires approx. 1Hp to replicate a typical human performance so I imagine a smaller motor will not provide enough oomph to outperform a hand winch.

The range of Superwinches or similar is vast and it's not difficult to find a small one which will do the job well. If the speed is not high enough you can adapt them without too much bother. If you get them on a VAT Free day at Machine Mart they are very cost effective.

why not get a winch that has 2 speeds? you can take the handle off and move it to a higher/lower geared spindle to suit. high geared to take up the slack fast and wind in boat with water assistance [for example], then lower geared for when the going gets tough..! also, this is great for building those big guns so you'll look buff in the summer.... only experience I've seen of power winches is the 2 old boys using it had even more cobwebs and dust on them when it'd finished. it was as painful to watch as their arthritis!
