Driver CPC for C1 - upto 7.5t licence

Not sure if people are aware of this, but the legal requirement for LGV drivers to hold a Drivers' CPC qualification / card which came onto force on 10 Sept also applies to anyone with a pre-1996 C1 licence permitting them to drive upto 7.5 tonnes on their "normal" (i.e. non-LGV) licence if they are driving a vehicle above 3.5t professionally (in the course of their work).

This may affect people who only though the Driver CPC applied to "LGV"s above 7.5t - i.e. where you had to take the LGV/HGV test.

For example I have a C1 licence from 1983 (although I have allowed my LGV C+E licence to lapse) so I can drive a 7.5t, but to do so for work legally I would have to hold a driver CPC even though I don't have an LGV licence any longer.

This may affect some over 35 who qualified to drive before 1996 and might drive 3.5-7.5t on their normal licence.

IF driving 3rd party loads ie delivering other peoples stuff (hire/reward)you need one, if say youre a scaffolder driving a 7.5t carrying scaffold and you work for the scaffolding company erecting the scaffold you don't. Or thats how it was explained to me.

I don't think that's right.

Anyone driving any class of LGV(i.e. over 3.5t mgw) in a professional capacity (i.e. as part of their job) now requires a driver CPC qualificaton, even if their normal (pre 1996 car) licence allows them to drive up to 7.5t.

HDAV is correct, as there are several exemptions in place. One of them allows "carrying equipment or material that you’ll use in the course of your work, provided that driving the vehicle is not the main part of your job."
