Decent grease gun

Can anyone recommend a decent side lever grease gun that is easy to fill or takes a cartridge. More importantly, it doesn't spew grease from every part of it. Also, a good place to get cartridges of quality waterproof wheelbearing grease at a reasonable price.

The cartridges are less messy but it's cheaper to get a pot of water proof grease, take the the plastic cap out of the inside and shove the handle of the gun into it. You get a full gun and hardly any air pockets. Granted it a messy way but baby wipes get rid of the grease in one wipe

That one doesnt use a universal cartridge .. I go through hundreds of guns and thousands of cartridges a year.. and currently I am using this

http://www.sealey.co.uk/PLPageBuilde...roductid=11205

Its expensive, but very good their manual sidelevers are quite resonable too , can generate good pressure with a decent stroke output

http://www.sealey.co.uk/PLPageBuilde...productid=9033

Things to look out for, strong side levers that wont collapse under force when you get a plugged & dried out grease journal and you have to pump hard, and ones that have strong barrels that wont dent if you drop it on the deck, because then the cartridge will stick, along with the priming plunger. Some I've used are terrible to prime, and that is a PITA when it happens all the time

This one is dearer

http://www.sealey.co.uk/PLPageBuilde...productid=5274

but no better IMHO

Thanks guys, getting some great advice as usual. I already have the Hilka as mentioned by Tonymac and that is the reason I want another grease gun lol. I might have got a duffer because it squirts more grease out of every joint and opening than it does from the nozzle. The more expensive of the Sealey manual guns merits a close look and I like the idea of the cartridge even though they are more expensive. I must use enough baby wipes to keep Pampers in profit for the next year or so. I will also look at the Screwfix gun too but my main concern is that the gun has got to be a solid bit of kit that don't leak and works every time. Keep the ideas coming please, the more advice the better.

All I want is a quality gun that takes carts and don't leak from everywhere. The Sealey seems to be made reasonably well and fits the bill price wise. Hey Jizm, what price are you knocking them out at and what's the cost for the grease carts mate.

Same here - gets everywhere!!!

And whats the best way to clear blocked nipples? Whenever I try a grease gun it seems that 70% of the time the grease just squirts out all around the nipple.

There is a tool to clear them but maybe it's easier to unscrew it?

Nipples mostly dont get blocked .. its the bearing surfaces which they feed that get plugged,.. and most grease guns cant overcome that pressure to blow out the hard mass thats got built up around that area.

And in the same situation, the push on fit leaks heavily as you exert more pressure to try and blow out the plug,.... with a common exception...., often the nipple head gets deformed with an odd knock or abraision, and the grease gun head does not seal around it .. it looks ok on a quick glance, but look closer and it is not .. the hardest one to spot is a compression hit dead on the top of the nipple .. it looks ok but in actual fact its deformed and wont accept or hold the push on grease gun fitting, or it leaks to buggery when you pump .. also .. after some good use the head on the gun/flexi hose becomes slack and also wont seal ...

THis ones for JSP

I like to change the nipple clamp on the end of my gun hose regularly .. after vigorous pumping sometimes a loss of sensation & force is noticeable and worst of all .. escape of lubricant unintentionally

Bigmuz, that was funny, superb

nothing worse than a blocked nipple!! you just have to pump harder which may cause ejaculation and make a mess.
