Before you splash out on new bearings, brake shoes, drums?, etc., it may be worth pricing a replacement axle. This would come with all new brake parts, even the Bowden cables and would save you a lot in labour (I don't know how thirsty Nasher would be after an afternoon of battling with your brakes )

Now that's my problem in life in a nutshell. I only think tactically and not strategically.

I can do a very good deal on a new axle as I now have a contact again at the company that makes them for most of the retailers.

If you look hard enough an axle set of Bearings, seals, brakeshoes and Bowden cables is @140, so unless the stub axles are shot it's normally more economic to repair.

Just let me know when you'd like to do it, I'd be happy to help. Oh and by the way, I fall over after a couple of Guinesses these days, but can drink tea by the gallon

Agreed

But, if Merlin's not too hot with the spanners and has to pay someone to do it, then the labour cost of fitting a replacement axle would be a lot less than that of stripping down and rebuilding both hubs and may therefore be a more economic option. On the other hand, as Nasher has confessed he's not feeling too thirsty at the moment, I reckon Merlin may do alright with replacing the shoes, cables, bearings, etc.

If you really get stuck, and could get it over to me, let me know and I'll do the bearings, seals and brakes for you Friday afternoon for a beer or two.
Sounds like the labor part is covered...

dixon bate do trailers with disc brakes here.
I would really like to get one of their axles to fit on my trailer, but they only sell complete trailers.
