Bigger wheels for trailer.

I have a Indespension roller coaster 1 unbraked trailer with 145 R12 wheels. I would like to fit bigger wheels on the trailer but when I phoned a local dealer a young lad on the other end of the phone told me that I couldn't.

Is he right ? or...

Is it possible to go for a bigger wheel that has the same spaced holes to go over the studs.

He may have got confused about the question. Your original wheels are likely to be Smiths rims, which aren't manufactured anymore. Maybe I'm being generous...

All you need to do is measure your PCD (likely 4 x 7/16" studs on a 4" PCD) and then look for a 13" wheel (I'm guessing that size you're looking to upgrade to?) with matching PCD and ensure you've the mudguard clearance and offset to accomodate the change.

Though, to be honest, I can't remember the last time I saw a 13" wheel with a 4" PCD, so deffo measure that.

Thanks TG, my trailer is only just over a year old, yes I was thinking of going up to 13", I have got plenty mudguard clearance and the distance between holes on the wheel looks to be 3" not 4"

Make sure you're not measuring adjacent bolts, rather than opposing ones.

If it's a newer trailer, the wheels will be different to the SMiths ones, so definitely check that dimension and the wheel stud size (likely either 3/8" or 7/16" I'd have thought)

There's plenty of 13" on 100mm, but not on 4" (101.6mm)

There's plenty of 13" on 100mm, but not on 4" (101.6mm)

That drawing makes more sense thanks TG it looks more like 100mm than 4" Not sure of diameter as it's dark outside but if my measurements are right then I presume I could go for the 13" wheels then.

Yup, but don't forget there's only 1.6mm between the two PCDs and I can guarantee that the 100mm won't fit on a 4" hub. Also, the stud size is important too.

Indespension should know what hubs are fitted, to your trailer, straight off the top of their heads.

Or, as Mick pointed out, take a hub in to be measured.

Well, cos I'm suuuuuuch a nice bloke, I've just dug out my Indespension manual.

According to their specs the RC1UB is fitted with a SB036 axle and therefore HU031 hubs and WT008 wheels.

The spec on HU031 hubs: 4 x M12 on 100mm PCD
The spec on WT008 wheels: 145R12 4 x M12 on 100mm PCD

So, looks like you're in luck, I'd say. There's loads of 13" wheels available with 100mm PCDs, due to the caravan industry (very common on Alko running gear).

Give them a call on Monday, to confirm I'm not talking a load of arse and then get shopping

I bought a pair of galvanised wheels home from the US, before I left I took a wheel off the trailer and put a piece of card underneath the wheel holes and drew the exact pattern, I then took the card with me and matched the card to the correct wheel once in the trailer shop.

Galv. wheels are the best, why are they not available here????

Yep will do TG, like I said, I will take my spare wheel with me when I call at Indespenion Manchester. If all okay 3 x 12" wheels will be up in the for sale section soon, one unused.

Here they are after I etched them, painted them and had tyres fitted to them.

Small part to get too excited about but I bl**dy hate rusty bits on my rig and this seamed to be a way to sort that bit for good.
