Best Trailer for SIB? Bunked or Roller?

Hi guys. I have a rather old bunked trailer (converted to a flat wooden base that the SIB sits on) that is getting towards the end of its life. The bearings are shot (and sound awful), the hubs are shot and the frame is rust covered. I'm looking at perhaps getting myself a new (second-hand) trailer but don't know what trailer to get. From what I gather bunks are good for SIBs providing they have support for the transom. Any ideas? Cheers in advance!

Rollers may stretch the fabric where the rollers hit. I'd go for the more even support that bunks provide.

Agreed

I can't help with the brand of trailer, but something with a galvanized coating would be good. It doesn't need to be ultra heavy duty, but something with at least 12" tires is best.

Cheers for your replies! It may be that I have to rebuild the trailer and add bunks for now and get a new trailer next year as I'm possibly facing a costly engine rebuild! will post a design or two within the next few days. It may be that it is only surface rust.

If that is the case, I would recommend tearing the bearings apart, and seeing if there is any damage to the hubs, and or the spindle before spending any other time or money on the trailer.

I planned on replacing the bearings and hubs before I did anything

Shouldn't need new hubs, just bearings and races. If it needs hubs, you might want to look into trailer replacement, cause hubs don't usually fail. Hubs in the USA are easy to find and reasonable from Ebay, with galvanized hubs.

I will post pictures of the hubs tonight, but they are a bit rusty and have a few dents etc in them. I will look at both replacement hubs and another trailer, although I will have to sort the engine first

Anyone know where I can get new hubs and bearings? The spindles are actually fine thankfully! the measurements for the hubs are 100mm by 100mm and the spindle is an inch in diameter. I don't know what wheels it takes but the tyres are 4.80/4.00-8.

Okay that is a weird hub. They have sealed bearings. The ones posted by Nick are not a sealed bearing.

Does it matter if I replace the hub with another that is
1. Circular and not square
2. Not using sealed bearings?
Also, what difference is there between 4" PCD and 100mm PCD?

Probably better off measuring with a set of calipers.

Measure inside-to-inside and outside-to-outside of the holes, and split the difference to get center-to-center measurement.

Ditto for tool for the spindle diameter measurement.

To answer the question of can you swap hub bearing styles, that depends on what the spindle can accept, and Euro parts are different than here. Measure the spindle and see what corresponds.

The centre to centre measurement is 101.5mm, the wheel has 2.50A X 8H2 on it and is made by Starco (I believe) and the spindle is 25mm/1 inch

I went back and looked the picture of the spindle. I am going to say no to using non sealed bearings, as the seal would have to ride on the really rusty part of the spindle. Get the exact same hub and bearing setup.

That is a 4" pcd hub & probably a 1" shaft so you should be able to get standard taper bearing type hubs which are readily available & fairly cheap
You will need to check that the stub axle isn't an odd length but it doesn't look it
The seals on standard bearings run on the hub so the rusty shaft won't matter
Although you will want to clean it up so the inner bearing slides on easily to the shoulder
The ones in the link nick herne sent should be ok but ask if they are pressed steel as the pressed steel ones aren't as good as the solid type
