Best Tow Car!

Well bought a 2014 Touareg SE V6 earlier in the year. Just used it to go to Spain and was really impressed with the drive. Did 2250 miles towing with the rib and back at 24mpg. Real easy driving, comfortably towing at 70mph, trailer weight around 1400kg. Also towed with the cover on.

Does anyone know of a better tow car?

I tow my Tornado 5.8 sitting on a twin axle trailer with Audi A6 20 Tdi Avent 190 bhp without any bother . Average mpg 32 and never had any problems on the slip . Roll on Saturday weather looks good for a blast down the coast to Baltimore West Cork

You could tow that (1400kg) comfortably with a mondeo so define better? MPG, running cost, comfort?

To put this into perspective, i just recently chopped in my xtrail for an xc90 and tow a confirmed 2k. The xtrail was at limit i would suggest but it handled everything fine and still got over 30mpg towing.

Quality Bigmuz, you get that fitted from the stealer or specced from the factory?

Just really pleased with the car and cannot think of a better car to buy. I also run a Mazda CX-5 but the Touareg gets my vote.

Might be buying a mates disco 3 HSE soon, 59 plate with just over 130k on it though

Don't need it for towing but loads of luggage space for the sib, camping, 7 seats .... Useful bit of kit

Best Tow Car!

Disco 3s and RRS just breakdown due to THE worst electrics. Lovely cars, just prep your wallet for annual bills. Disco 4, much better.

I've read about electrical problems on disco forums..... And dodgy electronic handbrakes, EGR valves etc
Disco 4 would be stretching the budget a bit far, I've known the current and previous owner of this disco and it's had issues but hopefully they've been sorted now
👍

When we were at the boat show looking at various ribs (before we bought Iolar), we were very much 'into' the idea of an RC. The chap at the Ribcraft stand frightened us off by confidently stating that you couldn't put a rigged 585 on a trailer and have much change out of 2 tons. We had a Seat Exeo at the time with a towing limit of 1600 (depending on who you asked).

I know what you mean, it was the same when we got the truck. The Exeo was theoretically legal to tow the Redbay but it didn't feel specially happy and I'm not sure how long the clutch would have lasted. The truck is a much more relaxing tow. I appreciate it's not a real 4x4 but I love it. (as long as it gives me a break from the garage bills and the chassis stays in one piece)

Dan, i know for a fact my 6.8 fully loaded was 1910kg to be exact on a 2 wheel trailer. The 6.8 is a much bigger boat (width too) so hard to believe you were given correct info.

As for the thread, for towing 1400kg the last car size i would buy is a big 4x4, just wasted if buying purely for that task.

With that said, money no object i would buy the touareg too

I used to do my towing with a 1997 728i BMW, which was cool, because I only own a SR4. Sold the BMW, now its down to my 1984 Land Rover to do the towing, which it does, at a reduced pace though.

My dad owns a Disco 3 which is an awsome vehicle for towing things, but it needs attention and love from time to time, which it does get from him, haha.

Had one of these (several of them) for about 15 years they tow anything with ease & in most of those 15 years I did 20-30k towing big stuff. Not once have they ever stopped working or cost much to run bar mid 20's mpgs.

I just bought this one yesterday to replace my existing one. This one is 25 years old & has never towed anything in its life, this ones a keeper & shall never be getting a dunking if I can help it.

I have friends with RR & LR products that spend more annually on fixing theirs than the cost of one of these outright, madness.

Yep, We had one a few years ago definitely the best tow car I drove. Also had a disco and found the trailer meandered more due to the Discos height and wallowing ride.

Now have an Amarok and get the best of all worlds. Ideal for towing and loads of space to chcuck all that wet gear etc. Only downside is very thirsty when towing. (17MPG)

Been towing all my boats for the last 15 years with a Toyota landcruiser turbo diesel, hasn't missed a beat in 270000 k.

What?! How can you say anything good about a modern truck that returns 17mpg towing? That is unacceptable. The Disco height meander sounds like twaddle. Whatever caused that particular trailer to snake, I very much doubt that it was the height differential between a Taureg and a Disco. How old was the Disco?
