Audi SQ5 Towing

Anyone has experience of towing with the above car, good or bad.
Probably towing no more than 2 tonne

Don’t think towings the issue. As far as I know the electrics are canbus, and canbus and water don’t mix.

That’s why I don’t use my q7

Quite a bold statement! Care to elaborate?

Thought the whole point of launch and retrieve was to avoid dipping your tow car in the drink! I tow with an Audi Allroad and have no intention of getting it wet. Even on a low tide I've used rope sling on the trailer to the tow bar and hauled it out.

Cr@p - my Yanmar inboard is running CANBUS. Hopefully we remain above the tideline

No experience with the Q5 but towing regularly with an A6 allroad which easily pulls a 2,000kg boat (Ribcraft 6.8) and will easily launch and recover on some fairly nasty slips given the right tyres.

Which engine are you considering? the 3L diesel is the same as in the A6/Q7 and is great even if it isn't the most economical compared to more modern units.

The engine is the 3l Twin turbo diesel, think it’s the 326 bhp model

I was told by Audi not to even consider getting the back end wet with Salt water as canbus connections can blow ecu rather than just fuses.

Don’t fancy using a rope to tow out of, what’s the point. Why not just get a vehicle that can get wet that you can wash off later. Like a pick up or landy.

I drove and SQ5 for three years, obviously plenty of power for towing although the hard suspension and snatching due the torque didn’t make it the most comfortable car to tow with. Also if you are thinking about launching with it check out the wading height, it is much less than the standard Q5

You'll struggle to find any car less than 10yrs old that isn't CanBus. If you're getting the car wet, you're doing summat wrong or you are launching & recovering in unusual circumstances. Most outboards have some kind of CanBus or a proprietary flavour of CanBus built into them these days.
You need to find another Audi dealer[emoji6]

Probably true, but I still wouldn’t take the chance of dipping it in the water, even accidentally, with a 50k car. Rather use an old pick up. Just my personal opinion

In the ten years of launch and recovery I have never had reason to get the car wet. Are you launching a very. Large rib from a shallow slip?

I use my range rover all the time and I find if I stop reversing when the water just touches the wheel rim I only get the tyre wet and there pre canbus tyres so no issues go any deeper and id be more concerned with the brakes getting covered in salt water than anything else

What is pre canbus tyres? You mean tyre pressure monitors? Proper ones are normally inside the tyre anyway so water won't effect them. They are crap mind you anyway but another story, not if they break but when.

I’d rather not drive an old pick up 60+miles on the motorway......every time I want to go out on the water..... my car is fine on a slip and no need for it to get wet, for a beach launch use a tractor.... no canbus but still don’t like being submerged in salt water.....

Can understand that. Horses for courses. I only have to drive 5 miles in any direction to get to beach or slip , so traveling far in an older vehicle is not an issue.
