Listen to SW boat transport. He's entirely correct, as is the text in the link Blueboy posted.
Kerbweight means nothing. It's down to the MAM of the tow vehicle PLUS the MAM of the trailer-IF the trailer is over 750kg.

Your trailer has no MAM plate. With no MAM plate, 'potential' means nothing. An old '1200' sticker means nothing either. It needs documentation (ie a MAM plate) for the law to act on it.

You either need a 750kg trailer, or a B+E licence. It's feasable and practical IF the current boat on trailer with normal kit onboard weighs under 750kg to effectively convert your trailer to an unbraked 750kg trailer and to stick a 750kg MAM plate on it.

However, it'd be a far better idea to go take the B+E test and then never have to worry about it.

Nos, am I not getting what u are saying because it's not, as per the link ? Or are u meaning if the trailer has no plate at all !?
It's the kerbweight and it was done like this to stop tail wagging the dog and to keep the weight down. The new revisions really do bring it down.

Nos I don't know if trailer has or hasn't got plate yet , need to check in 3 weeks when home.
Blue boys links on gov site states:
if trailer is more than 750kg as long as it does not exceed the unladen weight of vehicle & combined does not exceed 3500kg mam
I should be ok if this correct

No. You are reading what you want to see not what is written.

Yeah, but... All that bit of text means is that on a cat B licence you can't have a trailer that can possibly weigh more than the unladen weight of the car towing it.

For example:-

Car weighs 1500kg unladen and has a MAM of 2000kg then the maximum MAM of the trailer can be 1500kg (3500kg in total).

Car weighs 1400kg unladen and has a MAM of 2000kg then the maximum MAM of the trailer can be 1400kg (3400kg in total).

Car weighs 1100kg unladen and has a MAM of 1500kg then the maximum MAM of the trailer can be 1100kg (2600kg in total).

HOWEVER.

If the car weighs 1500kg unladen and has a MAM of 3000kg then the maximum MAM of the trailer can be 750kg (3500kg rule).

If the car weighs 2000kg unladen and has a MAM of 3000kg then the maximum MAM of the trailer can be 750kg (3750kg in total).

The text is correct, but you are reading it wrongly. It says "combined does not exceed 3500kg mam". This means plated gross weight of vehicle plus plated gross weight of trailer.

It IS as written, but it's not an easy one to understand.

Basically if you have a cat B licence only, once the MAM of the tow vehicle exceeds 2750kg, you are restricted to a 750kg MAM trailer.

The MAM of vehicles that can be driven on a cat B licence can be up to 3500kg. As a holder of a cat B licence can tow any legal unbraked (ie MAM of up to 750kg) trailer, it gives a potential MAM of 4250kg.

This is simply because a cat B licence holder can tow any legal unbraked trailer with any vehicle they can legally drive on a cat B licence, as long as the unladen weight of the tow vehicle is more than or equal to double the MAM of the trailer. For example, you can (just) legally put a 5.4m Searider on a 750kg trailer, but you can't legally tow it with a mk 1 Fiesta as 750kg is more than half the unladen weight of the Fiesta.

Assuming the plated gross weight of vehicle was also 3500kg (ie it had a payload of 0kg!) then yes correct.

Not correct. It is firstly the gross plated weight or the vehicle and gross plated weight of the vehicle. Only if the two combined are less than 3500kg does the kerb weight then become relevant.

Towing vehicle MAM between 2750 and 3500kgs = 750kg trailer MAM

Tow vehicle MAM less than 2750kg then the GROSS TRAIN WEIGHT is 3500kg. Thus its 3500kg - KERB WEIGHT of tow vehicle = trailer MAM.

Tow vehicle MAM up to 2750kg has a GROSS TRAIN WEIGHT of 3500kg max.

Tow vehicle MAM between 2750 and 3500kg has a GROSS TRAIN WEIGHT of 4250kg max.

In short, if the MAM of the tow vehicle + MAM of the trailer is greater than 4250kg then you need a B+E licence.

If its less than 3500kgs the then tow vehicle KERB WEIGHT matters and it must be greater than the trailer MAM.

If the total of both the MAM's is between 3500kg and 4250kg then the trailer can only have a MAM of 750kg.

You fall into the tow vehicle between 2750 and 3500kgs MAM as your MAM is 3210kg.

This allows you a 750kg trailer.

The plated gross weight of your vehicle (3210kg) falls into the 2750kg - 3500kg category, so you are limited to a trailer with a plated gross weight not exceeding 750kg.
