This is simple.....

The easiest way to reduce risk of injury is to remove people from harms way.
So when no one needs to be on the slip, why have them there.

If you're happy to have your friends/crew/family paddling around behind your car, in front of your trailer, over the edge of the slip, under your car, under your trailer on a slimy boat ramp then crack on. I'm sure "plod" will commend you for you diligence.

As regards Lymington and it's "Harbour nursery-paddling committee"..... unfortunately they didn't make it on to my "places to visit" list anyway so I'll not be loosing any sleep over that.
Like I said yesterday,

'Is it really safe to leave a outboard running, prop spinning and no-one at the controls in a public place - however you sugar coat it?? '

I actually refused first to have air rollers on this trailer due to bad experience with another trailer .
But these tires / tubes Vanclaes is using are not cheap Chinese crap which are permanently flat when you need them and these are used on medical equipment, wheelchairs etc .

Yes but would not the above situation have someone at the helm?? (In fact they’d have a team of professionals/crew monitoring the boat and divers!!!) Which is very different to the point that had been made, leaving a boats helm with the dangerous spiny thing churning away in the water and no one in control of it.............. I’d also be interested in the opinion from one of the RYA’s instructors who frequent this forum regarding this ‘technique’ and whether or not it’s in the RYA syllabus.............let me guess.....lol
Merc controls have a nice safety feature, with your engines idling if you need to leave the helm for any reason you have a ‘lock out’ button on the throttles , once pressed you cannot engage any gear until it’s cancelled.

In the states they use the term ‘power loading’ boats onto trailers, funny enough due to slipway erosion it’s banned in some areas and you get fined if your caught doing it

There’s a difference between horsing the boat onto the trailer & leaving the engine in gear with the bow nudging the rear rollers. As usual it’s all getting a bit hysterical & out of proportion. 90% of the time that I launch & recover, we’re the only people on the slip. There’s no one anywhere near the rear of the boat, the whole operation takes around 30 sec from the bow touching the trailer, to the engine off & tilted. A little common sense helps.

Good also to read earlier in the thread you leave a person at the helm - 100% agree about common sense, there’s not enough in this world!

Your missing the point, control measures especially singlehanded launching ( no help)
1) make sure everyone clear of the prop as you would reversing down a slip with the public around speak to people or wait until no one around
2) the prop is spinning to assist you because you need the boat to stay in position whilst you jump over the side and attach the winch to keep the boat on the trailer takes seconds once attached pull the kill cord.
3) winch the boat on and secure.
This is all when you need help because of conditions that stop you safely retrieving your boat on your own, you have no need to get anywhere near the prop because you don't get out of the boat near the stern because your console is well forward and your at the bow when you stop the engine.
I've done it loads of times with the rib when wind and tide has made it an hazard to try and fight to keep the boat inline whilst I recover the boat.
As I said if it's not for you or you haven't the common sense to identify the risks and control them then don't do it.
As a scenario how many think that whilst traveling at 40 knots in their ribs have ever thought af hitting a submerged object a container for instance the hobby has risks but with control, training, expearence & commonsense most risk can be managed in the case of the container luck.

I am bewildered why you would have anyone in the water at the stern of a boat when it was being launched or recovered, engine running or not. That's just bloody stupid.

No one leaves the boat, your hand's never more than a metre from the throttle and similarly for 10 to 15 seconds. No one in the water, who's at risk?

But of course the umbilical lengths are set short enough to keep the divers as a safe distance from the thrusters even if they did go upwards

There tendered to prevent being drawn into thrusters human error can and has been a factor
