I think the good availability of landy bits is that out of all the large amount produced since 1948, about 75% are still said to be in use.


I wonder what the % of import kit is ?.

Its all about horses for courses....or should i say "hamburgers for courses"

I have no particular problem with LR's, in fact i have always found Defenders quite capable off-road but then again and as i previously said, how many people buy LR's and actually use them off-road for what they were intended for? Probably only a very small percentage.

I need a 4x4 for the work i do off-road around our land and on-road for the trailers i pull. For that reason i prefer a Japanese 4x4. Sure, a Defender is probably better in the thick mud but how many hours do i spend driving through boggy countryside compared to more normal on and off-road conditions?
If i needed something to use in the mud for 90% of the time i would consider another LR but because i tow all around western France, i want something with a higher level of comfort and reliability.

And the "newish" one was an L322 shape Range Rover.....Had a private plate on it so couldnt tell how old it was.

In 2006 we bought a "Landmark" Disco 2....when we took it for its first MOT.........It fecking failed!!! With only 12000miles on the clock. Needed new shock absorber on the front nearside and something else too but i cant remember what that was although im sure it was only minor.....Its inexcusable these days for a vehicle to fail its first MOT on something relatively major like a shock absorber.

Let's face it, The Discovery started out as a BL parts bin exercise. LR is a whole different beast now.

Got a bmw 320d and it doesn't move in the snow apart from that I love it but it's getting changed soon, but not for another bmw due to company policy

My D2 was cheap (ish) and I rolled it in to our local 4x4 guy and he has helped me bring it up to a good level of maintenance, the next thing I need to do is sort out the slight drip now and again on the sunroofs and it'll be a great motor. Its great to drive and the TD5 is a great engine too. A lot of 4x4 for the money

I just cant justify upgrading it for a newer one

The old man had a six cylinder Princess back in the day. Sounded like a bucket of bolts on full lock. It got recalled for new engine mounts that moved the engine back and improved the driveshaft angles.

Totally ... my 4.8 X5 is parked when the white stuff appears, but fook me ... you'd need spare trousers after abusing the 'loud' pedal the way it drives for such a big ship ... try passing a petrol pump though .. it does enjoy a sip or two Horses for courses .. I hear whats being said, but I'd still need a lot of persuasion to buy LR with the build issues of the past ..

Drove one nearly 20 years ago, in the wet spent more time sideways than straight, great fun when your 21.

Try an 8 speed auto D4 next time you're in the market Biggy. Getting near an X5 on the road but, with real off road capability. The latest LR gear is light years ahead of what was being produced even 5/6 years ago.

Most definitely... After that Disco i owned, i vowed i would never buy another LR again
Even today it would take a lot of persuasion for me to consider something like a D3 or 4....

You know I might just do that, Ive always liked the look of them, and theres no doubting the off road side of things.. I fancied one for my works unit 3 years ago in commercial variant, knowing I would only keep it for three years ..... but then I saw the price tag £33000+VAT .. for a 4WD van?
