New Discos and Defenders are as cr*p as anything out there, there is no quality control, customer support or anything. They implode and explode faster than you can fix them. They're not built, they're sort of fiddled with and see what comes out the other end. My mate's LR3 is on it's 2nd box and 3rd engine and it's done less than 70k and I only mention that because of first hand experience.
A new Disco, Range, Def owner is not a happy one.

That's why I also run a Patrol. 435k miles and still on the original clutch. Wipers have been changed mind.

Bollox.

We're LR'd up to the eyeballs down here and know them through experience of ownership. Both my F-in-Law and I have tried most of the jap stuff in the past. A good pal of mine owns an LR main dealership, I'd have the inside track if there were major issues and there are none. LR is a now top notch product which is getting better.

Tata paid £2.4bn for LR and made £1bn in 2012. You don't make that kind of money selling 'crap'.

Google Tata, they are quite some outfit.

The rest "out there" will need to run to keep up, especially Mitzy.

My brother is service manager for an idependant garage that deals with a fair amount of landies, as we are out in the sticks.

He sees some troubles, but no more than any other vehicles, the main difference is the ease and cheapness of after market spares.

I reversed my defender into a tree and broke 2 lights on the back. I went on fleabay and picked up 2 new complete lenses and holders for 4 quid each. Try getting lenses for jap crap that cheap!

Also managed to drive over a big tree stump, and ended up needing 2 new steering arms, bought aftermarket heavy duty ones, and paid 110 quid for the pair!

there are loads of companies doing aftermarket parts which are as good if not better than OEM parts.

Had my defender 3 years now, and never broken down yet (apart from what i have managed to break of roading!)

I used to have a daihatsu petrol 4x4, the distributer went and was quoted 350quid, part ex, recon part with 6 weeks waiting time, Hmmmmmm really good service from them NOT!

So you can keep your jap crap, and korean crap.

It just shows that I am able to drive it off road in some rough ground unlike some other dross!

On our shoot I regularly get asked to go in front of the Jap crap so I can give them a tow when they give up

I suppose that if you have ever broken anything on your rib it shows the standard of your conning then?

Hmm, alarm bells would start ringing for me....supply and demand n'all...especially when you think that LR represent less than 4% of the market..

Dont think you'd ever become a millionaire selling Jap 'crap' spares

In all fairness, i nearly bought another Defender the other day...a really tidy x-mod 90 with soft top. I'm still tempted, not because i think they're the best 4X4Xfar but because they're so simple to work on....getting fed up with all the electronics that go into 4x4's these days

Funny enough, three days ago i drove down from Northumberland to Portsmouth and then onto France....saw 2 LR"s on the hard shoulder. One series 2 Disco and a newish Range Rover..........

Driven most types of Landrover, Toyota, Mercedes, Izuzu etc off road , with the right tyres & given a reasonable driver they're all good. By the same standard they all get stuck, break down & can be an expensive repair !!
Currently running a Defender & a Merc ML. Both do what I want them to, they just do it differently. Would I want leather seats & cruise control in the Landy or Goodrich Muds on the Merc probably not.
