I had an XJR and had nothing but troule with it. Whilst it was a very nice and nippy car it cost a fortune just to keep it on the road. As a toy it would have been perfect but it was a hassle it been off the road having work done.
My brother had a 3.0 litre V6 X-type and the bottom end went on it with only 45000 miles on it. Due to one reason or another yu can't replace them and the entire engine had to be replaced!

I think the only British car I would have is a Land Rover.

Well I had 2 brand new Golfs on hire - all had waterleaks into the cabin - they all sucked in exhaust fumes when the sunroof was open and one had gearbox trouble. This was in about 2003 and they weren't that nice to drive either.

And the Passat I had about 6 months ago was horrid - the electric handbrake on a manual didn't help either but the car was a right slug to drive. The 1.9tdi isn't as bullet proof as people think. I know a bloke who uses one as a taxi - it's his own car and he babies it. At about 90,000 miles they always seem to get trouble with the dual mass flywheel and also trouble with crank pulleys. This is on the Skodas but it would be the same on the VWs.

The X type engine is basically a Ford duratec so I don't see how you can blame Jag - the engine is normally very good - you always get the odd one I suppose.

Strange that cos the Jag garage knew that it couldn't be replaced and when we were looking for a knew engine a 3.0 V6 was on ebay for spares or repair as the bottom end had gone.

I can blame Jag as it was them who fitted it.

The engines are constructed at a Ford plant, the gearboxes are made at a third party and assembled to the engine at the Ford plant. Not going to comment on engine reliability or gearbox. You pay your money and you make your choice. The information you use to make your choice can be gained from a number of sources, Google and friends included. I get my information from a source I trust.

My mate is the warranty manager at the local vw dealer and he said he gets alot of trouble with the new C mdel passat and advised me against trading in my B5 for one.

Yes I also hired that model and they were fine - bit boring to drive and not the best of seats - the so called anti submarine feature means the front edge of the seat digs into your legs and couldn't be adjusted - on the models I had anyway.

I remember having had 3 Passats and then an Audi A6 all in a row and then was given an Alfa 156 by the hire company. As soon as I sat in it I thought yuch!!! It felt so tinny and cheap.

But after 1 hr of driving with it I wouldn't be parted from it. I had another 2 and a 159 and the driving experience really is in a different league to the VW/Audis. And to be honest after 15,000 miles the Alfas survived my style of driving better than the German cars!!!

So do I but I think it's the only way to go to get sales back from Merc/BMW. Quite why anyone would buy a German luxury car when you have the XF - XK and the new XJ is beyond me. They are stunning cars with stunning engines and they keep people in jobs in this country which helps ANYONE with a small business in the UK - including RIB builders/operators!!!

Everyone that got in my XJR couldn't believe how nice it was.
Only thing was things kept going wrong with it, it cost a fortune and was alot of time taking it to and from the specialist.

Sold it and got another Volvo, great car goes quick enough and so far has had no problems.

The Jag was excellent though!

Had a Jag XJ6 years ago. Was like riding around in an arm chair. Just ate motorway miles.
Got to adventures once and did a un planned 180 degree spin. Sh!t me up but it still did that smooth

I test drove a V12 XJS about a year ago. The thing was a wreck - just not been looked after at all - it still went like a dream though. It would still cruise at 140mph and it was so effortless. The head of Lamborghini used to use one as his everyday car.

Got to be honest though - even though I hate the Germans they aren't ALL bad. In the last 3 weeks I met a German who had bought a stunning XJS and was on his way back to Germany with it.

Then I met some Germans with a 110 and trailer who had come all the way to Swansea to pick up a Series 2 109". They said that Land Rovers were getting really popular in Germany now and there were loads of enthusiast clubs!!!

Our Cupra came with a 1.9 tdi producing 190 we had it tweaked to 235. The little car is a real mf and my boy can get nearly 50 mpg out of it! my figures are a bit lower

The tyres are quite pricey however
