I often use low ratio on my Discovery - most hill starts with a heavy trailer are in 2nd or 3rd low - pulls much better than 1st or 2nd high. Work up to 5th gear low - then change into 2nd or 3rd high - takes a bit of a knack but it's great.

The Discovery 2 TD5 auto was great for towing - very easy.

Range rover 4.6ltr V8 hse, running on LPG, crusing at 80-90 mph 35-36 mpg equivilent and 34mpg towing at 65 ish

Had a disco 3.9 on single point LPG towed my pac up a slipway, didn't even use lock diff (was jammed anyway) 2nd low range and good on fuel as long as you were booting it 90-100mph 34mpg equivilent, 60-70 mph 24mpg

On an endurance event it would use about 5-6 gallons for the weekend, 3 x 1hr practice sessions and 6hrs of racing.

I have had to give it up, as i has been a bit poorly.

having towed a boat(from 4 to 7 mts) for about 30 year,s
i now have a jeep grand cherokee auto diesel with low box 3.0 CRD..

my last car was a x trail( manual) but i missed the low box when on the slip way but was good on fuel on the motorway towing about 36/40 mpg.but having had to slip the clutch a bit i missed a low box

with the jeep i get arount 28/30mpg and have more power 4 long motorway hills..

its a compramise between low box 4x4 or no low box and better fuel consumption..

i think automatic diesel 4x4 with low box is best after all you dont want to get stuck when the tide is comming in

also i think auto is best 4 towing but its personal choice,
if u are towing a small rib then the x trail is not bad (even with no low box)but if a large rib 6 mts+ i think u need a big 4x4 and dont forget all the kit u take, i go diving a lot so need a large 4x4

Going slightly off topic what are these 4X4's like that engage the 4X4 on demand? My mates got a Honda something or other and it has this, think the 4x4 comes in when the wheels loose traction.

I've got it on my Hyundai - I've never noticed it as you can 'lock in' 4wd with a button - anytime I think I may need 4wd its already on - it cuts out gradually between 18 & 25 mph once you get going.

Works for me as I know I am not going 'offroad' and the worse I will normally see if a wet , slippery slip way, but can allow me to get 40mpg if I drive sensibly on the m'way ( and doesn't shag my tyres on the road - 35,000 miles on 1 set ! )

My Volvo switches its 4wd system in when the fronts slip. Apparently. The shallow gradient slip I use in hamble doesn't really tax the car at all. Doesn't have a low ratio box.

I do like the auto for use on the slip. Gently squeeze the throttle until you start moving. No clutch slipping and working out when to let off the handbrake.

Not sure about all cars, but the Honda and other such modern school run 4x4's don't have a very high towing capacity. My 2WD audi a3 can tow more according to the hadnbook.

Nothing beats a clapped out old Jeep Cherokee 4l auto. 3.3 tonnes tow limit, and so light at the back it'd probably float if the tide came in.

Thats what the Freelanders do thorugh the viscous coupling isn't it?

Looks like the current freelander has an "electronic" centre coupling not a viscous coupling:

My Volvo uses a Haldex coupling which is also electronic.

Transverse engine Audis also use Haldex.

Viscous coupling is permanent 4WD with the most torque sent to the axle that has most grip. Completely mechanical. Longitudinal engine Audis (Like my old 2000/X V6 S4) use this.
