Lovely, Put them in D and then just accelerate when you want to. No hill start malarky or clutch slipping if you have no low range. BTW the V6 Shogun is shocking on fuel i mean like 10-12 MPG if your thinking of buying one.

Toureg 5 litre V 10 auto no problem - and before that a 5.7 litre V8 Holden Ute Auto 2wd coped if you were gentle with the power!

Autos are fantastic on slips - they are great offroad - you can trickle them over boulders and there is no clutch to burn out.

Downsides are they use a lot more fuel - they can overheat when towing long distances in hilly areas - they don't offer as much control when engine breaking.

You can drive an auto like a manual without a clutch - change down when approaching rounabouts or going downhill - you get far more control.

Interesting read, thanks mate. I've only ever used one car that was an auto. A J reg xj6 many moons ago. Loved it and loved the kick down too. I'm going to leave the V6 shogun though

it's an L reg with 11 months MOT and 5 months tax, £500 if anyone wants me to pass on details.

The advantage of an automatic is that you can apply max torque at zero miles per hour. That equals max pulling power.

Would always go for an auto. So much easier to manoeuvre slowly and carefully. Just make sure the 'box is up to it though.

Years ago I was loaned a 3l V6 for a week when the 2.8 Diesel I had was in for some warranty work to be carried out.

It was a bit thirsty, I remember thinking it would have been cheaper to have hired a Diesel.

I'm told the 3.5l V6 is a lot better however.

Get about 13 mpg out of my Jeep Cherokee. 4.0l petrol auto. It must be spraying unburnt fuel straight out the exhaust to use so much

I switched to Autos about 7 years ago - I'd never go back to manual now. I had one of these ;

for a few years . Pulled everything I could find up our local wet slip without blinking. Alot of stuff for the money and getting cheaper by the day- but dont expect to sell it on for much.

Had 3 more since then - now on new model 2.2td Auto - just as good and if I drive sensibly can get 40 MPG !

The reason I looked at the shogun was you always see old ones still looking mint, 7 seats, and have been told they could even pull a new joke out of chubby brown. I'm after something very cheap as a 2nd car/tow donkey that will mostly spend it's time sat doing nothing. To make it seem like the right thing to do I also need it to be big enough so I can fit most of the kids in.

I pull 3.5t (max legal limit), trying to catch 2nd with a manual on a hill with that lot behind you takes a bit of skill.

Auto every time for me went to LR factory last week and they reacon the new D4 gets max torque from around 1200 reves and thats 425 bhp 30 mpg as well.

That'll be 30mpg at a constant 56.364mph.

The diesel is 244hp and 600nm or about 440ft lbs. In the Jag the engine makes about 270hp so watch out for the D4 chips soon!!!
