Yes again different league.

I had a Disco II on lease for a while - took it offroading in the Beacons and a friend followed me in his new Amazon(about 3 yrs ago). It grounded out twice in the first 100yds and he gave up - took him with me in the Disco - he was stunned what it could do. The Disco II is better than the Disco I offroad but not a patch on my 110. Traction control was pretty good though but they fit that to Defenders as well now.

There was a great test in a 4x4 mag the other day where they tested just about all the 4x4s. The Landies all came out tops - and that's in a mag I had stopped buying because they were always knocking LRs.

One test they had was hill decent - the Land Rover system was much slower than anyone elses but the best was the Defender with normal engine breaking - much slower than the electronics!!!

Couldn't agree more that the LRs have the very best of the best off road ability and I much prefer the styling of the new Range Rover over anything to come out of Japan. However - having spent too many hours / days without my LRs in the past because of knackered alarm systems, difs , auto gearboxes, head gaskets, ABS and a load more reasons I've forgotten (mostly when the vehicle was less than 18 months old !) - I know that for the 99.9% of the rest of the time I want a 4x4 ON-road then I feel far more confident it is not a LR !

For any car there will be the 'lemon stories' be they Japs or LRs but my personal experience of running both types over the last 10 years causes me to favour Japs for the purpose they are put to for the vast majority of the time. Even given up on LR110s on the farm these days and gone with Tourags !

Well the RR automatic gearbox was ZF - German as used in the BMW etc - as was their ABS system I think.

Talking of the Toerag a very good friend of mine has a top of the range Porsche Cayenne. He has just had an old LR 90 rebuilt and it looks amazing. Guess which one he is now driving every day - the 90!!! As he says the Porsche may be a lovely CAR but the LR is FUN. He also lives on a farm and finds the Cayenne gets stopped by the tiniest bit of damp clay - and we get lots of damp around here!!!

Does any LR deisel engine except the new V8TD come anywhere near the Toyota 4.2TD?

Bearing in mind the cost of a new V8TD compared to a 2 year old Toyota

Yes the V6 2.7 is pretty good - almost the same in power and more torque.

Don't get me wrong the Toyota Amazon is a great vehicle - the ONLY one of the Japs I would consider but LR have raised the anti so much now it just can't compete.

I'm amazed, does the 2.7V6 really put out more than the 430Nm of torque that the 4.2 straight 6 Toyota does?
