suzuki vitara
Hi
I had a 2002 vitara which I used as a runaround, farm vehicle and for towing the boat, however woodworm has got hold and I am now looking to replace it. I have no need for a big 4 x 4 and I am considering a newer 2006/2007 vitara. It has 20 hp more than the old jeep from a 1.9l engine and I like the idea of a high/low box which the old one had! What are the opinions of the newer vitara as it has a renault engine. Reviews are mixed but I have not seen too many complaints about the engine itself.

Been looking at them myself but they don't look man enough for a 6 m rib I have had a Toyota RAV4 AWD 2.2ltr which was and decent fuel economy not a lot of help but an alternative.

Hi yes i am looking at them as well but no high low box for a steep slip. My old one is 107hp and 38mpg. The newer one is 127hp with similar mpg

Not fully sure, 6.5m ribtec with 175 Yamaha 2 stroke and up to 250-300l fuel fully loaded, single axle trailer, i guess 1300kg? Vitara rated to 2000kg. Not sure I would max it out but the old jeep managed well enough. Most of my journeys are short.

Why not an automatic then I have a shogan auto I don't use the 4 wheel drive on the slipway no need beauty of the auto no clutch slip low gear ratio to start.

Why not a Vitara? How's the road tax on the 06/07 against a 2008? Maybe you're looking at Commercial? In any case that's plenty of HP for pulling that rig and a neat package for our wee roads. I've no personal experience of them but they seem to get good enough reviews where it counts - 4x4 ability. The Renault engine wouldn't faze me - IIRC it was cars they had issues building, not engines?
I'd avoid Land Rover products, IIWY, as they've thrown their car keys into waaaay to many fruit bowls over the past 15 years and the local dealer network deserve to be given a life sentence driving a Defender...

Wouldn't dream of buying a landy for this rib, be fixing it more than driving it.
I can recommend a nissan xtrail, pulled my 2000kg rig about for last 18 months, only changing it to get an auto now (xc90). It will genuinely do 50mpg on a run and very high 20s when towing. I tend to keep it spooled up so burn more than I would with a lighter boat.

Spooled up just shot your self in the foot there then ( won't pull itself over a match stick )
As far as reliability of the Freelander or Disco that's old wives tales there very reliable these days and the Suzukiare thirsty motors

I keep it spooled up to save the clutch and dmf actually. It will happily pull it low in rev range. Keep in mind I have near as damn maxed this xtrail out so fair play to it.
With all due respect landys are not reliable at the age/miles this money will get you into.
If you like the vitara then go for it, at only 1300kg you won't be taxing it.
