John
Yep it was on a trailer… but seeing as how neither of us had HGV licenses and heat from the turbo would intermittently set fire to the floor etc. There was plenty of other things to worry about.

[QUOTE=simmons0;178215] If your doing 68 through a camera on a dual carrigeway, how does the camera know your a van and not a vehicle allowed to be doing 70?

I was told that fixed cameras have 2 lenses, one for the different heights of vehicles. When you have a look at them, you can see one is a normal lens, but the top one is red. Dont know why though...

Depends which fixed camera - the most common Gatso has one lens and a flash above it. The Truvelo which takes photos as you come towards it has a red lens which is an infra red flash unit.

There may be more to it than that. I was flashed by a camera when travelling less than 60mph. The vehicle was a Range Rover towing an empty boat trailer. Unless the camera was faulty, it knew I was not just a car. No ticket arrived.

ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) is now here. Depending on which camera was used its all computer linked now. The camera will know the owner, whether its taxed, whether its MOt'd or insured.
I'm all for it. I'm fed up with obeyeing the law and knowing that lots of people don't have a MOT or Tax, and paying for it.
I'm sorry for all those people that get caught speeding, because I know lots of illegals get away with it, but speed limits are there for a reason. To save life primarily.
Its unfortunate if you have a chav BMW supercar but really theres no room for those cars on Britains roads. Why not try a race track !
Alternatively obey the speed limits.

Ahh but what about speed limits that have been reduced just to make money from cameras?

Great news today - the camera West bound M4 Port Talbot is being removed. It has caused massive congestion since it was introduced and accidents have gone UP!!!

and why is it they put up cameras on all the nice strait bits of road where it would be safe to pass the caravan you are stuck behind… the A1 and A9 are prime examples.

Hrm, what does a Discovery Commercial class as then? Would that be on the restricted speeds? Certainly hope not, otherwise I've been breaking speed limits from the moment I had it!

It'd help if the database wasn't flawed. police_crushed_my_car_even_though_it_was_insured

Speed cameras are innacurate, badly sited and in general a menace that distracts drivers from looking at the road. I've been flashed before at under 40mph in a 50 limit on the M42. I've also had one go off as I approached the front of it (this is illegal unless it's a Truvelo type) while doing under 30 in an unlit 30 limit at night on a sharp bend. I nearly ended up in a wall-I couldn't see anything but a white glare for 2 or 3 seconds.

Breaking the speed limit doesn't kill. Inappropriate speed for the conditions kills-and that could be well under the posted limit.
People unfortunately are mostly sheep who will believe any old crap fed to them and the constant harping on about not breaking speed limits by this government is ridiculous. We now have drivers on the road that think as long as they aren't breaking the limits they can't be doing anything wrong. The limit says 30 round the blind bend nevermind that they can't stop in time to avoid the pedestrian walking round it.
The same goes for outside schools. 30mph past a school is asking for trouble at chucking out time-but it's legal....

I'm all for 20 mph speed limits outside our schools and in all housing estates. Our European cousins manage it so why can't we.

And I'm also for more Police on our streets. We've got more Police but we don't see them. They are all busy avoiding paperwork and the legal quagmire the European Rights Act have given us.

Who remembers Blair saying criminals would be frog marched to a cashpoint to pay their fines until his son Euan got caught drunk and incapable on the street. Oh and the home secretary with the pot smoking son. Shame these guys talk the talk but can't walk the walk............................
