VW jokes aside. I've started looking for a small modern diesel (no older than 5 years old) for the wife to use.

Whilst on my search I have tested a few of these cars and keep coming back to Skoda 1.4 and 1.6 tdi's. Part of my testing involves checking for emulsified oil under the oil fill cap. But I have found that lifting the cap reveals much more oil smoke coming out compared to other diesel cars.

I'm assuming that this is normal for VW but I've never experienced this before so am looking for assurance that this is common.

Off-topic: How does the price of gasoline compare to diesel (road-going in both cases) over there? Diesel here is generally a bit more than premium gas (I assume that's all due to road taxes.)

I would be looking at petrol for a small car depending on the mileage she does
As regards the smoke not to sure I don't get any on the Defender but when I had my VW T5 from new they told me to drive it hard to seat the valves in properly as they are very hard

The other way round here diesel has been higher priced than petrol

I had to think long and hard about what we were going to use this car for. She had a Picanto but 2 weeks ago someone T boned her forcing us to look for a replacement. We don't want a massive motor as I've got the truck but something that I would be more comfortable in for longer journeys so I can put the old girl in to semi-retirement.

Gasoline car be cheaper in maintenance.
Any - but personally I like HONDA/Toyota.

I will consider diesel only for regular long trips.

I'm not an expert but have friends in charge of company cars.

I get that a lot from the garages that I'm visiting. Diesels are fine for local driving if you know how to drive them. My only concern is the DPF which can get clogged if it doesn't go though it's regen cycle. I just have to instruct the wife to keep her eye out for warning lights.

I've had a few customers that have had the small diesels like polo etc and they have gone back to petrol versions cos of problems with dpf and egr having to take it for a blast down motorway every week seems to defeat the object

Personally I wouldn't buy a diesel runabout. My previous Dispatch van with 50k miles,is on its 4th EGR valve. It's the 2l HDI engine. The writing is on the wall for diesels.
