And to avoid Boris's LEZ charge. Friend of mine had an old series 3 Landy (van style) and Boris wanted 100 a day to take it inside the M25!

you'll get more motor for your dosh with a disco than a freelander, and there's loads of 2nd hand bits about to keep it going too
i've got a defender 90 hardtop with the seat rails in and i've cut the bulkhead down, so seat goes back and it fit me just right, but landrover elbow is something you have to grow up with

Why don't you consider looking out for an Audi All-Road...

The early ones with a manual gearbox are reliable and now can go for as little as 3.5k and you could then use it as a main car as well. No need to run 2 cars

Good move on the Freelander !

I'm not sure a Disco comes under the heading 'smallish' 4x4...

I don't think it quite has the capacity of my main car, which is a LWB VW Transporter. I do need something with enough ground clearance to manage some ruts too. Liking the mog though!

Maybe a Disco would be worth considering, but at that price it's verging on project territory.

Has anyone tried a Shogun Pinin?

I would go Suzuki John if you don't want to spend a lot

Td4 is a good little car but only for 5'10" and below! I had one, and sold it after six months because it can't tow anything compared to a real 4x4, there wasn't enough space for me in the front and there isn't enough space to fit suitcases in the back. I replaced it in 2002 with the Discovery I still have

F2 is a different story, much more room and a great vehicle.
I've got a 54 plate TD4 commercial and am 6', I have loads of leg room and need to have the seat pulled forward a little bit.
I can't get more than 30mpg out of it but then it has a tuning box and a remap plus autobox.
I paid 4500 with 70000 on it, heated seats, air con, heated front screen etc, not had any problems in the 9 months I've owned it.
