Second hand Range Rover how risky a buy?

I am considering buying a ten year old 100,000mile Range Rover 4.6HSE with lpg conversion, Auto, everything works, the air suspension system has been overhauled. How likely is this vehicle to give expensive problems and how much would you pay for one? Basically is it a nightmare waiting to happen?

they can be a nightmare, they can be OK and its a bit of a lottery!
The EAS (electronic air suspension) playing up and loose cylinder liners are the main problems. check carefully for any coolant loss. the v8 is likely to need attention soon at that mileage, Camshafts failure is common at higher milages. check out rpi engineering website for info on V8s.
EAS software is cheap so you can do your own diagnostics.
Economy on gas even with a sequential system isnt good. I just fitted a sequential system on a 4.0 and MPG is around 10-17 MPG.
all that said they are a good vehicle if you get a good one and can live with the gas consumption. as for price depends on condition. the one we put the gas on was on a R plate 70K miles with suspected engine problem (turned out to be a 10 quid sensor) that was bought at auction for £700 which i thought was quite cheap.

make sure you can live with the petrol cost.

we have a lwb v8 from late 90s, lucky to get >10mpg!!

My 1988 110 V8 does 18 - 20mpg on a run - VERY suprised - it's on carbs as well.........

To be honest the P38 has never been one of my favourites - would rather a classic or the new one. Having said that 2 of my mates have had them and been very happy. Personally I would buy a Discovery 2 but they do hold their money. Another option would be a late high spec V8 Discovery 1 auto - much less agricultural than a 300tdi.

Jono . Working on about 14mpg maybe equivalent of 25-30mpg on lpg.

BUT what's it worth? £4k +/- £500??

Fair point 15-18mpg on the move at 60 on dual carriageway, but round town, stopping and starting the sheer weight in conjunction with auto just drinks it.

Well one way to look at it is… it will only cost you money when you drive it. unlike a new car which will deprecate just sat on the drive.
