Proposed car Tax scheme

Not sure if this is the right position for this John. And I had a squint to see if someones posted this elsewhere but didn't see anything, but if you drive a car... read this

< Edit: Just moved it to the new "Cars & stuff" section JK >

Sarah Kennedy was on about this proposed car tax scheme on the radio apparently there is only one month left to register your objection to the 'Pay as you go' road tax.

The petition is on the 10 Downing St website but they didn't tell anybody about it. Therefore at the time of Sarah's comments only 250,000 people had signed it so far and 750,000 signatures are required to stop them introducing it.

This is legit... from the 10 Downing Street's website. Once you've given your details (you don't have to give your full address, just house number and postcode will do), they will send you an email with a link in it. Once you click on that link, you'll have signed the petition.
Democracy in action?

The government's proposal to introduce road pricing will mean you having to purchase a tracking device for your car and paying a monthly bill to use it. The tracking device will cost about £200 and in a recent study by the BBC, the lowest monthly bill was £28 for a rural florist and £194 for a delivery driver. A non working mother who used the car to take the kids to school paid £86 in one month.

On top of this massive increase in tax, you will be tracked. Somebody will know where you are at all times. They will also know how fast you have been going, so even if you accidentally creep over a speed limit in time you can probably expect a Notice of Intended Prosecution with your monthly bill.

Sign up if you are in agreement with the petition - if not just forget it.

836,243 sigs now...

I think it'll be past the million mark by the 20th. I wonder if they'll listen?

I suspect it'll be suicide for labour if they don't-riots and all.

So, white van man and the school run get taxed for causing congestion? Great stuff!

As I've nothing to hide, I don't have a problem with this.

no of course not, and I have absolutley no reason to doubt you at all under any circumstances, after all the PM probably said the very same thing to the Police recently,

So in the unlikely event this ever happened, it would require what? a major computer system to tie it all together, linked to the DVLA data base etc. Lots of design, implementation and onging development work by IT professionals perhaps?

Your an IT Consultant aren't you?

The technology is in full use as we speek, its not new, and has been around for 7 years or so, ever since somone was able to link a mobile phone with a GPS unit. Private individuals can pay for it to monitor fleet vehicles for example and its very useful for that, having it foisted on us, and for a politically motivated use is another thing altogether.

IMHO implementation cost for Uncle Tony would be minimal, and I think its not to be underestimated how close we are to this form of control.

You'll be the first one to moan when the prices on everything goes up...

Postage, courier fees, food prices...

You don't think delivery is a charity do you? We're not going to absorb the cost out of our already overtaxed and minimal profits. The consumer will pay for it-and for any business that needs something urgently is going to be shafted by it.

It makes no difference. They say they will tax us to make us learn to be more efficient but they don't give a Tax break back.

And it wouldn't be too bad if they spent all that tax on prisons to lock all the bad people up.

In fact lock all the bad people up but don't spend so much money on them. A wired Gulag in the Hebrides should do nicely. the thieving, raping, assaulting, robbing chavs wouldn't be so likely to re offend then.

Is this to raise more money so other budgets can be offset or this genuinely to help with congestion and reduce global warming? So far I've not heard a peep out of Croney Flier about a scheme to help people work from home in large companies. I'd love it!

It's almost as though the ability to travel is now being turned into a new class system. They US uses a similar tracking scheme for insurance I think but thats voluntary.

It would seem logical and fair, wouldn't it? And it would be a fantastic bonus for boat users.

However, even I can't see them missing an opportunity to double charge us though. My guess is that they might reduce exise duty a bit for appearances sake, but that's about all. They'd probably find a reason to put it back up again after a while too.

Help! I'm turning into Biggles!

John
