Then there was this car - the Talbot Sunbeam. I remember drooling over one in Halfords that was on display - you could win it as a prize. What was special about it? A Lotus engine and RWD!!!

All my mates were going mad over XR3s - yuch not me!!!

Got some great memories with that car (racing a BMW M3 down the A3 to Portsmouth / hitting the brakes for a speed camera, losing the back end and going through at right angles to the road!)

Brittle cars though - 4 years with me and it was wrecked! Nothing else quite comes close now though.
I had a 1.6 and a 1.9, I also had regular use of a mate's 1.9 with a full Turbo Technics conversion with intercooler. It was around 180bhp compared to the standard 125. It was a total handful, the torque steer and lack of grip was frightening. It would put the needle on the endstop in fith which was 140mph-ish.

[QUOTE=codprawn;213206] My first ever car was a Rover sd1 vitesse. Last of them - twin plenum model - they only built about 200. It was D reg bright red. Loved the car to bits. Bit of a handfull for an 18yr old!!!

How the hell did you insure it?! Those were the days when insurance went mental and killed the GTI's.

It cost me about £1200 - an obscene amount of money in those days. i did get quotes for over £2k but Taylor Price and Company were by far the cheapest. Still pretty good for performance cars today.

I have to be honest the car terrified me at first - it was so wide and had so many curves you couldn't see where you were going. I avoided town centres for about 6 months. It was the only car I had driven apart from a metro and a Ford Escort that I passed my test in. Then almost a year of no driving at all - then pick up the SD1 from Lex Meade in Cheltenham.

I reckon all young drivers should start in something thats massive and powerful - they would be too scared to drive fast!!!

Is that cool because it didn't have proper doors or your opinion that it was cool.

I dread to think what Limey Linda is going to say about this one when he/she sees it. LOL.

I wouldn't buy one now, but at the time when I was a boy. YES it was cool, this is a 70's design icon and is up there with Commandar Strakers car with the gull wing doors. Perhaps the TR7 as it was in the New Avengers, like the Granada MK1's as in the Sweeney etc....

I was a bit of a TV addict back then too .......
