Number plate valuation

I am selling one of my BSA's and lot of folk have been asking about the reg number. As far as I know it is transferable (it says nothing about it not being on the V5, not sure how else I would find out?)
Now I don't believe in sperating original numbers from vehicles and didn't intend to but before the vehicle sells I want a value and option, I ain't selling it cheap for someone else to do it, at a certain price principles get thrown out the window on this issue!

How do I find out
a. whether it is transferable and
b. If so what it is worth?
The reg is SKN **H
Anybody know how to do this? I know the mechanics of transferring plates but only on modern vehicles.

I have been told its worth from £300 to £3000. I would just like to find out to see if its worth anything at all.

to start with the bike has to be taxed and mot'd before you can tranfer numbers, you need to talk to someone like elite registration or go on line, the number doesn't look that good as it's not ageless with the 1970 H on it, i have RIBS 007 on my car, what would you reckon that was worth? i've been offered 1k for it.

For a plate to be worth anything, you need to first find a buyer for it!

.....people like Reg Transfers and Elite are good at telling you what a plate is worth but they are quite often just interested in 'getting it on their books' so to speak.....what they dont say is that they then have to find someone that is interested in buying that perticular number in order for you to get any money.......could take years even if it sells at all!

Its a bit like selling your house......and estate agents.

Try putting an ad on ebay to see if it gets any attention....i normally find that is a good way to find the true value of something.

We have two plates, one on retention and the other on one of our vehicles but we got these, not to make a profit by hopefully re selling later on but just because they meant something to us. Maybe someone will contact us one day and offer us good money for them......but then maybe not....

At the risk of pushing this thread in a completely different direction, i followed a silver BMW last month on the M42 with the plate
'V14GRA'.....the bloke driving it looked real hard.

Bruce,

The DVLA site (http://dvlaregistrations.direct.gov.uk) will let you see what they sell plates for.

e.g. B12 SKN is listed at £399
and SKN 61F is being auctioned with a reserve of £350

So that might be a guide?

I'd have thought it might be worth more than that (I have no interest in it) although is it a valid UK plate? Is it actually RIB 5007

The less numbers the better

Then it comes down to frequency of results of how people search.

Most commonly initials or names. TOM for example, but then it is initials with two numbers for DOB PJS 77 for example. So letters of common names are worth more. PJS as opposed to XMP.

funny words are worth less and are harder to sell as people don't search for them. Unless they are very good, such as D16GER. Any rich owner of a plant hire company would buy it! Or BMW anything!!!

Doubt your plate is worth much over a few hundred, and as mentioned, it may be hard to sell. You may spend £110 xferring it on to paper only to have to renew it every 12 months as you can't sell it.

There's a bloke in NI who owns a newish Rangie with the plate "willk's surname" 1. Occasionally, he parks it in front of me place of work

I'd pay him just to park it someplace else - the queue for cheques and raises has to be seen to be believed
