so how would you be getting 2 stroke to the bores to lubricate the pistons?

That's normally the function of the fuel/oil mix even on oil injected engines.

I suppose the oil could be injected into the gas - remember petrol turns into a gas before it burns.

No it doesn't-it turns into a mist (can't remember the technical term)-droplets suspended in air.

And what does the mist turn into??? Petrol vapour or gas is what burns - not the liquid. Granted it is atomized into small drops before it's passed into the combustion chamber which makes it easier to turn into a gas before it burns.

I beg to differ-but that's another argument.

It's not a gas in the crankcase.Thats where you need the oil on the bores more-the crankcase side of the piston so you get lubrication on the downstroke.
