It's perhaps a bit early to be certain but if the Verado 275 is half as good as the hype AND it finally makes it into the UK, then this is the most likely one for my boat. Unless, of course, they come up with a bigger one!

Fortunately, I have a long lead time, as I don't intend to order it until Autumn 2005 for Spring 2006. This means that there should be some useful test reports available before I make my final decision. It also means that a fair few people will have established it's reliability in the meantime.

According to some of the boys on "Scream&Fly", it seems that Mercury are currently only making the Verado available on a handful of boat/engine packages and that stand-alone engines are not yet available in the States. The logic is that only these boat builders/engineers have had the training to properly set up the engine and its ancillary components.

Incidently, other US sites have highlighted problems with the Yamaha 300 HPDI and everything else from that 3.3 litre block, so that doesn't look too promising at the moment either.

Either way, the boat itself will be a Scorpion - provided they don't get too creative about pricing over the next year.

A: Wait until the 2005 version comes out!

Navigation on the present model gives you directons but no map to look at. Even my iPAQ provides a map - and gives short cuts through motorway service areas !!!

However, the new version of the Grand Cherokee, which is due to start production for sale outside North America in Q1 2005, has a "proper" screen.

Now I have a dilemma ... do I stick with the grotty (basic version) 3 series BMW until next Spring and wait for the better GPS nav system or do I buy now and get an independent nav system?

This is a tricky one ...

As an old hand and one who very much enjoys the odd "fishing trip" on this Forum, I can't help but chuckle when seeing new folk like yourself rising to the lure. Don't take offence Codpiece, it's all in good fun. Given time you'll no doubt get to meet a bunch of us and I'm sure you'll find we're all pretty decent folk. In fact, once you've met up it makes the banter all the more enjoyable.

Anyway, Phil Davies and me are currently collaborating on a new fishing venture which, I hope you'll enjoy and join in with oonce we cast our line.

Take a look and see what you think. It cost £450 give or take and during the 5/6 days I've had it I must say I am very very impressed. My pals who have Jags, Land Cruisers, Porsche Cayenne's etc which all have built in units have commented how very impressive it is.

If you want a full report look up Pocket GPS World in your search engine and search there for TOMTOM GO. There's a very comprehensive report on it.

Take a look and see what you think. It cost £2.99 give or take and during the forty odd years I've had it I must say I am very, very impressed. My pals who have Minis, Escorts, Novas Etc which all have glove boxes (to keep the feckin' map in) have commented how very impressive it is.

......www.anyfeck'garage.com a superb source of information offering not only numerous variants of "feckin'maps" both in size, price and detail but also a superb array of "feckinsweets" - "feckincrisps" & "feckinsoftdrinks". Unfortunately my glovebox (similar to those found in Novas, Escorts and even A4's) became so stuffed with the same I had no room for the "feckin'map" which you describe. Furthermore, I often found myself suffering from the "what the feckin' hell did you say" ear problem which oftern occurs when in aforementiond "anyfeckin'garage" due to both me scowse accent and the mandatory "No Formal Qulaifications - Literacy - Common Sense - Good Manners Required" qualification that most employers of "www.anyfeckin'garage.com" seek as a prerequisite of employment for their staff.

TomTom on an Ipaq with GPS is great - far more versatile than dedicated car system - you can even get OS maps and marine charts as well.

Even better when you find out where to download all the maps etc............

Really helped big style when driving through Madrid and Barcelona!
