Is there a warranty that's worth buying?

Does anyone here know about vehicle warranties? My experience hasn't been good (trashed gearbox caused by oil seal giving way - "I'm sorry Sir, the gearbox is covered, but the seals aren't. Any damage caused by a non warranted part is excluded")

Any of them worth looking at? Or all a waste of time?

John we have an ongoing problem with Jeep at the moment. Bought a new Grand Cherokee had gearbox problems from a month old went back on numerous occasions with the same problem during warranty. One month out of warranty they decided that the gearbox was actually knackered and needed total replacement at some ridiculous cost

non of them are that good but the best one around at the moment is from the rac,if you do get one,get the top spec and highest pay out. im guessing your not talking about a manufactors warranty from new

Iv just got the AA breakdown repair warranty £60 a year and covers you up to £500 5 or 6 times a year. If something goes wrong seems good value to me as my landy is now out of warranty.

Multipla JTD, 2005, 30k

I know they're not the most reliable car on the planet, so I'd quite like a warranty. Don't want to spend a few hundred quid on a worthless piece of paper though!

I won't buy an aftermarket warranty again-we did it once.

When it came to claiming on it they just ignored the contract and made up any excuse possible to worm their way out of it.

I had one aftermarket one and it was crap, sold to me by the dealer

some manufactures will extend your warranty or sell you their approved one depending on mileage etc, if you've let it fall out of warranty they charge a little more than normal but you need a FDSH I think, don't talk to the dealer call the number for warranty contacts in your service book.
My Nissan was £1400 for extra warranty from the dealer and £699 from Nissan warranty, they sent me a book with what is not covered.

I get the feeling that these are definitely the better type. The ones that list what is covered look impressive but leave way too much that isn't covered!

If the car is new to you and the dealer is supplying the policy make sure that they actually pay the premium I got stung by a S**t who included a warranty but did not pay the premium and lo and behold when something went wrong the insurance company informed that the policy was not in place as no premium had been paid, as yet i have not extracted my pound of flesh

I think margins are so tight, and buyers are becoming ever more savvy that manufacturers are making it harder and harder for people to make successful warranty claims. They will defer a claim at every turn where possible. This means that after market warrantors will find it hard to give a valid policy for a reasonable price that peeps could afford. Different where a policy is sold with the vehicle, where often it is included in the finance, but is usually a dealer or franchise option, and quite expensive

I had two with my last audi - one an official Audi warranty and one from Warranty Direct. The dynamic ride control failed on the car under Audi warranty period - they replaced all four corners with identical parts - happy enough. Into period with Warranty Direct and lo and behold DRC goes tits again - they replace DRC with much improved parts without quibble. For 12 months cover was 800 quid IIRC, about a 1/2 the cost of replacing the above issue. Their terms are on the website I think, showing what's covered and what's not..easy enough to get a quote, just put in a made up telephone number or else they'll be ringing you for weeks...

Well, I went for the Tesco (Car Care Plan) warranty in the end. Their "Finest" policy is much more comprehensive than the Warranty Direct offering, and £100 cheaper.

Knowing Fiat's legendary build quality I'll probably find out exactly how good this warranty is before too long.

Took an extra warranty out on my Navara D40 in september

Last week the clutch started to slip 84000 miles (but it had a new uprated clutch and flywheel at 27000 under warranty for known fault)

Warranty people turned up today and said, I had to pay for the clutch parts they would sort the rest

I took out extended warranty with Landrover BEFORE the end of the 3 year warranty at £85 a month with Roadside assistance and hire car provision . Just about to have a new auto g/box fitted at 80000 miles no quibble and a loan car included . The car has been towing 3 ton trailers continually since new!Engine is perfect so I hope to get another 80k out of the new box now.
